Starmer on Marr this morning

Delighted to hear him say " I don't think there is a case for rejoining the EU" and ruling out the return of free movement. Pragmatic and sensible view. After the disastrous Brexit policy nice to see he is being much more sensible now.

I am pro-EU and think the next few years at the very least will be disastrous for us on the back of leaving the EU. However, I too think any though of a new EU referendum or move to rejoin the EU in the present time or the near future will be pointless and divisive hence why I wouldn't want it to happen. When the reality of what life after the EU starts to sink in with huge numbers of those that voted for it, I think there'll be a move towards rejoinining again a generation down the line when we are once again the sick man of Europe and have suffered immensely from this Dickensian rabble who 'govern' us.

I was talking to a girl at the check out in Tesco today. She's working part time while studying a law degree. She was hoping to spend a year in Europe, but is probably not able to now.

At 19 she's one of the generation with no voice. Too young to vote in 2016 but now dealing with the ***** of older people.

Even though the longer we have huge red tape and regulation to do any trade with our biggest and nearest trade block ; which, as the years pass will make Britain poorer
Less choice. And more expensive for the things we do want.
People poorer all round
Brexit was a lie and I want Starmer to develop the relationship with the eu that the mad dogs of farage Gove Johnson Patel & raab lied about to the British public regarding their benefits
EU was made out to be a scapegoat and it’s not true now and never will be true

This is what makes me so angry!
Poor lass, all because of an older racist xenophobic generation who are wandering around completely unaware of their prejudices
And therefore voting for Brexit
My parents are a case in point and my older brother
So sad

I agree. There is nothing to be gained by trying to overturn this. In recent polling only 27% of Leave voters think that the Johnson deal is "good for the UK". And therein lies the path to return. We are at present aligned on many regulations with the EU and "the deal" will punish us if (for example) we try to deregulate labour laws to undercut the EU. Similarly with farming and we have agreed to suspend change on fishing for five years (IIRC) all that has been "achieved" is introduce a huge volume of red tape which costs our exporters and discourages importers. It's a shidt deal but we're out. The teething troubles that have caused the great broccoli shortage will pass, Belgian chocolates and beer will return, etc.

But, it will become obvious that the lies told about the EU (Turkey, EU Army, imminent collapse etc.) were just that. The 2024 election will be fought against Johnson or another Brexiter. And that is the point at which the "deal" becomes the lead necklace around the Tory Party. They can no longer blame Labour for standing in the way of a deal. They did the deal and it's shidt. Let's vote...

Exactly - temporary triumphalism as seen from the OP is all they have. Reality will show that the whole thing is a pointless endeavour that has needlessly split the country and made people poorer.

In ten years, as accession talks drag on, you'll struggle to find anyone who'll admit to voting for it

Good post.
I’ll set aside my disdain for leaving and leavers for a moment or two 😬

What you cannot underestimate is the ‘lower than a snakes belly’ Tories attempts (using the ultra right wing media also) to run any story about the eu and frame them as mad nutters or the ‘barmy eu’
Shaping people’s minds now, in the medium term and in the run upto 2024. At the same time they’ll be throwing the kitchen sink at Starmer in terms of ; he’s taking us back in, higher taxes, etc etc etc etc. Backed by the media in the main.

In parallel with this there will be a drip feed of why it’s ‘great’ to be making our own decisions and amplifying anything minor as ‘brilliant’ that independent uk can do this or that without the eu blah blah blah
It’s already started with the vaccine approval’we approved it quicker than the eu’ BS.

Do not underestimate the Tories utter desperation to hold onto power just like trump
They will say or do anything
ANYTHING. Imho

A vote to rejoin in the next couple of years would have us going down the same roads we’ve seen in America recently. Unfortunately we will have to deal with the consequences of our actions and see the damage it does before we could even consider rejoining.

I’m a remainer but I have absolutely no idea where us or the EU will be in 10-15 years time. My instinct is to look towards rejoining but we just have to try and make where we are at now work. They may not want us back after the last four years anyway.

By the way there was a a pro Eu party at the last election who pretty much ran on remaining or rejoining the EU.

so the idea that the remain pro EU voters never had a voice or a voting choice is simply not true.

remind again how well the Lib Dem’s did again

More people voted for pro EU/Second Referendum parties than anti EU parties of were using 2019 election as the metric

Staying in the EU wasn’t a big enough reason not to vote for the usual party or their selves.

The Lib Dems could have offered free blow jobs and £5k and they still wouldn't have won. Don't forget that they thought they could temper the Tories in coalition and look what we ended up with.

I was to young to vote when Thatcher came to power and lost my job with her cuts.

I feel sorry for anyone found in this situation, but it is always going to happen.
