SSN Breaking News - EFL proposes framework for any division to end season on unweighted points per game basis

Middlesbrough Football Club now also running with this statement...
"The EFL Board met yesterday to consider the feedback and subsequent implications of last week’s divisional club meetings, as the league continues to address the many complex financial and operational matters resulting out of the COVID-19 crisis, including how the 2019/20 campaign is concluded."
EFL STATEMENT

"Clubs are now required to give the matter further consideration, before the board formally proposes the appropriate regulation changes, which will then be voted on by all clubs."

EFL Chair Rick Parry - "“The board has always acknowledged that a single solution to satisfy all clubs would always be hard to find, but we are at the point now where strong, definitive action is needed for the good of the league and its members.”

Well according to reports there are six clubs in the championship at present who want to cancel or void the season. 51% is needed for a decision to be made which is 13 clubs.

Not entirely clear but it seems first they vote on whether to accept the framework "soon". Then should circumstances dictate that they will not be able to finish the season they will then hold a vote to end it. Voiding the season is taken off the table.

To me that seems about a sensible a solutions as they can manage. Ideally I would like governing bodies to have the vote rather than the clubs themselves to avoid self interest, but they would open themselves up to a greater risk of legislation, and governing bodies tend to be full of bias and self interest themselves.

Unless there's a big change in circumstances regarding COVID-19 it's hard to see how any sport can finish the season.

September for restart and next year until fans are allowed back.

IMHO, if a decision has to be made then rule out the season completey, then ALL leagues have been tret fairly, I am of the opinion that football, again, at ALL levels should resume when normality is back but that ain't going to happen so treat every club equal & call it a day on season 2019/20

But how can you restart in September? Would anyone buy a season card if they were unsure it was safe to watch? Without ticket sales how can football clubs survive?
Sadly for me - It is easier to finish the season behind closed doors than it is to start a new season when you cannot guarantee fans being present.

That's the problem all professional sport is faced with. It's the nightmare scenario and difficult to manage.

As for season cards. Surely plenty will still buy. It's a huge passion for many.

I reckon we will get going in champ and prem next month and finish the season behind closed doors.

Hope it happens If safely done.

Does it mention the Premier League in the promotion & relegation? Or is it just assuming that they will finish their season so we'll know who is coming down?

I suggest each league has a draw with a bag of balls - each with a number on it.
The final six balls will be divided into 3 - relegation and 3 promoted:
At random - the final league table will be decided.

For example, the last 6 balls could include Leeds / West Brom / Barnsley / Boro / Reading / Notts Forest

The 3 relegated teams could be: Leeds / Forest / West Brom
Promoted teams would therefore be: Luton / Barnsley and Boro!

Thats fair isnt it?;)(y)

That's the issue here, looking to restart the following season, that was the reason I was saying football should only resume once normality has been restored, playing meaningful matches behind closed doors for what, money
Even when the season finishes clubs will still be in financial positions because no one is going to subscribe to a season of meaningful matches
Hopefully its not to long before normality & we can go to games again, though I can't see it before the turn of the year

"The board considers that the majority required to curtail the 2019/20 season in any division should be 51%. Determining whether or not to curtail the season is a decision for each division to take. "

That seems to be the key line to me. Is it in the interests of 13 or more clubs for the season to end now?

As I understand it, the points per game formula would then kick in if they vote for it.

No daft 8 team play-off for League One either.

Sounds like they'll only need 12 of the 23 teams from League One to want it to end for it to end.
Bolton and Southend are virtually relegated, and the costs are prohibitive, so they may well vote in favour.
Coventry would obviously vote in favour of it ending, as would the team finishing 2nd.
There's no benefit to the teams hovering above relegation or in mid table for it to return.

It's only teams like Sunderland that could possibly benefit from the return, as they're outside the play-offs but still with a sniff of sneaking in.

I think League One will end.
