Spurs open talks on Spence

Based on other transfers I think that we should get around £25m. I hope that I am wrong , but if Spurs offer Spence big wages, and a transfer fee around what they offered in January, what can we do if Spence refuses to talk to other clubs?
Transfers involve three parties, not just two.

Suppose it depends. We're not without cards of our own. It would take some nerve but we could put the ball back in Spence's court in that scenario and tell him he can rot in the reserves for a year then.

Not a game of brinkmanship I'd want to get into ideally but as long as other clubs the size of spurs were had made bids, I'd be fairly confident he'd blink first, much more to lose at this stage in his career.

I think those fans who think we're going to be getting £15 million plus for a player who has had 1 good season in his career are going to be sorely disappointed when we eventually do sell him.

The majority of modern football signings look to be based on one good season.

I'd take £17 million over £15 million + a sell on.
I still have limited faith in DS's ability to develop into something special.

Whatever we get, I hope we're realistic in what we think we can do with the money. We can't demand top £, and then expect other championship clubs to sell us their top scorer for £5-6 million.

We need to plough the bulk of it into a proven striker

We need to plough the bulk of it into a proven striker

If it's a proven striker at this level, it will be a veteran.

Whatever we bring in, I expect to be able to spend about half of it. The rest will go to shoring up the clubs finances.

We'll not bring in one of the rising stars of the division for the money we have to spend, and I don't think they represent good value anyway. There is no guarantee these guys bring their goalscoring (see Britt and Jordan Rhodes) with them, but the fee will assume that they will.

If we want someone younger, we'll have to find our own gems by trawling the lower divisions and Scandi-leagues, and then maybe giving them a year.

While Boro boss Chris Wilder has accepted the wisdom of selling Spence in order to generate funds that can then be spent on incoming deals, enabling the Teessiders to remain within the parameters of the EFL’s Financial Fair Play Regulations, he has no interest in selling Marcus Tavernier this summer.

Proven goalscorers: Britt assombalonga. Jordan Rhodes. Kris Boyd.
Unproven goalscorers: Bernie Slaven. Patrick Bamford.
Kris Boyd wasn't proven, the Scottish league doesn't count, especially those playing for the top two sides, getting 20 chances per game.

Assombalonga and Rhodes were both proven, we just didn't play to either of their strengths, and didn't create many chances as we played defensive or hoof ball. Britt was scoring at 1 in 2 for a terrible forest side, and Rhodes got 27,25 and 21 for Blackburn, before coming here. Our creativity (or lack of) was their problem.

In the last 30 years we've not had a proven or unproven striker get more than 17 goals in the league I think, which isn't great.

Wilder will get the full Spence cash to spend... apparently.

I was under the impression that a fee was agreed before permission given to the prospective buyer being able to speak to a player?

Perhaps things have changed!!

SSN reporting Conte being backed with serious dosh this summer, possibly looking to bring in 6-7 players. Just put another £3-5m on Spence's price with this announcement........👍

Britt had Traore and Downing feeding him in his first season - can't accept there was little creativity. Britt was a £15m striker who could not hold a ball up.

Kris Boyd was too slow for the Championship, even at Rangers he tended to used a sub.

Rhodes form and goal scoring was dipping at Blackburn when we bought him. I got the impression he was bought for Karanka which was not a good start to his Boro career.
