Sports Personality of the Year

More prestigious how? Because the sponsors say so? The fact the Laureus' voting process is a closed shop of a few dozen academy members, doesn't offer any clarity on its voting nomination process, has for much of its existence shunned football, American sports, cricket, rugby, doesn't suggest to me its any more prestigous than BBC SPOTY.

Unless there's a recognised ranking of sporting awards organisations the task of determining which one is more prestigious is entirely subjective.

In my opinion Laureus is more prestigious than BBC SPOTY and I'm not going to argue with you as to the whys and wherefores of my opinion.

So an opinion based on nothing of merit or substance? I mean, they're both nothing more than a means of self-promotion for the organisations behind them, so the prestige is questionable anyway.

The Laureus Sportsman of the Year award is much more prestigious because it is focussed on sporting achievement rather than personality.

Lewis Hamilton won that award this year and I for one am glad of that.

Hamilton actually shared the award with Lionel Messi so maybe only 50% more prestigious. 😏

That Laureus award has been won by a tennis player 15 out of the last 20 years so its obviously weighted towards the tennis set. Cartier do sponsor.

It's bent as a nine Bob note and anyone could have seen that the year Zara Phillips won.

Tbf to her, she was the Eventing European and World Champion when she won. You can argue others may have been more deserving of the SPOTY, but she was clearly an exceptional talent in her sport.

No doubt. I don't have anything against her, just the farcical BBC 'voting' system.

I agree you no doubt get people voting multiple times but aren't these phone votes now governed by strict compliance from ofcom? Anyway am not sure why would anyone want to bother to fiddle a vote on a sportsman/woman? Or indeed vote more than once.

Anything left to an unregulated public vote is always going to be incredibly subjective and prone to nonsense results.

Look at Jordan Henderson winning England's Player of the Year.
Did nothing for England, actually barely played, but the vote was flooded by Liverpool fans.

Key word - SPORTS....therefore Lewis should walk it.

But I would have no complaints if Rashford won it because what he has done outside of sport this year is quite amazing.

Full respect to Marcus for how he's used his fame for the benefit of hundreds/thousands of less privileged children.

and any notion that sporting achievement comes into it, went when Ryan Giggs won it the year he'd made less than 30 appearances all year and achieved nothing of note.
Yes that really bugged me. He won it because he'd never won it before, despite never deserving to. And then they voted him PFA Player of the Year too for the same reason. All the while the disgusting little toe rag was getting his brother's wife pregnant after a decade long affair.

You're right, but it'll fall on deaf ears. Every year we have the same fools misunderstanding the context of 'personality'.
Ha I think 'Great' in that context simply means big doesn't it?

Like when people say 'what made Britain great', it was simply its size in relation to 'Lesser Britain' (Brittany), not because it colonised a load of countries or whatever.
