Sports Personality of the Year

If they nominate Marcus Rashford and as of yesterday the BBC said they weren't necessarily doing so - last night's hattrick may have forced their hand - its a two headed contest isn't it? Rashford v Hamilton.

The rest are nowhere near. Hollie Doyle is 4th favourite behind Tyson Fury and then we get to Jonathan Rea. No disrespect to him, and his motor cycling abilities, but I suspect he could be a pointless answer to a question "name a sportsman who will be nominated for the SPOTY list this year"

Shouldn't they just scrap it and have a two year competition in December 2021 given all the event cancellations etc? How are they going to fill 2 hours? Show everyone of Lewis' Grand Prix wins?

I'd vote for Jonathan Rea. There is a huge motorcycling fraternity who would recognise what he's achieved.

Not necessarily for the right reasons, whilst Rashford will be nominated I'm sure, a win for him may be seen as too political given what he is achieving off the pitch. So that leaves Hamilton and as much as I'm not a huge fan of his, he is probably the most deserving based on what he has achieved this year in the sporting world

I think the key is in the Personality element.
Rashford should walk it.

As incredible as his off duty work has been, and it really has been, he's now a national hero, I don't think Rashford has achieved nearly enough on the pitch this year to win Sports Personality of the Year.

It's surely got to be Hamilton.

If you take sporting achievement out of it, Rashford should walk any award.

Except the "motor sports fraternity" would go for Lewis wouldn't they? I know there's a big body of MC fans but not enough with a car driver taking votes too.

It'll go down to popularity rather than achievements as always. Thats why Rea won't get it and Hamilton will struggle against a footballer. Remember the year Jenson Button had to take a huge paycut? Racing for a brand new team, that was decimated compared to the team it was based on, with a car that had an engine in that wasn't designed to fit? He wins the world championship despite all those odds. And still loses to Ryan Giggs in SPOTY

Rea got 80,567 votes last time he was nominated, coming a very close second to Farah on 83,524 votes. Hamilton was 6th behind Peacock, Joshua and Peaty.

the word "personality" is very misleading in SPOTY - it's not about who's got the best craic, the most charismatic, the most engaging, etc. It's just a synonym for "person" in this case

It's like someone saying WW1 really was a great war, the best we've ever had. There is a nuance in the words as they have different meanings within the context in which they are used

Really hope Marcus Rashford wins it, but as has been pointed out & I have no interest in motor racing, I find it mind numbingly boring, Lewis Hamilton will win it hands down for what he's achieved in his sport this year

I think Tao Geoghegan Hart should win it after his triumph at the Giro d'Italia. He was supposed to be there just to support Geraint Thomas but after Geraint crashed out he had to step up to the plate and was a phenomenal achievement.

A really great story and he is in the betting but cant see him winning it as the Giro doesn't quite catch the imagination the the TdF does.

PS aside : Nobody with a double barrelled name has ever won the SPOTY
