Disappointing last night. Think he’s been disappointing when he has played further forward. Needs someone infront of him for me.

played his best at rb. Probably in his mind has more freedom if he knows someone will cover when he goes forward.

when he’s rwb doesn’t seem to let loose

To me, someone going through the motions. He has explosive pace, offers penetration, ability to beat players, not on show - and the first game of the season. Worrying. He has to realise he ant too good to play for us.

Completely agree that he was disappointing. Really really poor. If we were to ever go 4 in the back I wouldn’t have him anywhere the team. If it’s wing backs he will play but he needs to improve on that last night. So frustrating.

I thought Spence had a good partnership with Roberts down the right. Roberts would come inside, dragging a defender with him which freed up space for Spence and often meant he was left 1-1 with his man.

I remember criticism of Roy Hodgson for playing Roberto Carlos in midfield at Inter. He was less effective as an attacking force because starting further forward cut down on his space for acceleration.

Being a good attacking fullback means being a good attacking fullback; it does not mean they would be even better if played as a wingback or in midfield.

He was a bit too much gung ho for me last year, maybe Warnock has worked on the defensive side of his game. He did ok last night but both him and Johnson seemed a lot more disciplined.

Woodgate touched on possibly a bit of a lack of discipline with Spence last season.

I’m sure he was right.

Spence is certainly a good prospect but all the talk about Tottenham and Mourino may have took his eye off the ball.
He needs to knuckle down this season, consolidate his position which isnt concrete yet.

He will still have good and bad games as he is basically still a kid, but thats the mark if a very player....consistency.
That should be his target this season.
