Spence

I hope he follows Tav's progression and steps it up
This is where I get confused.

I agree Spence can be a bit hit & miss at times but when he's 'hit' you can see the makings of a good player.

Tav is exactly the same. I see them as having progressed almost identically and when they were together on the right it showed.

This isn't a criticism of Tav, although I get frustrated by his decision making more than any other player.

Spence tried some relatively simple link-up play with Tav last night and Tav either didn't read it or was trying something else. No fault. No blame. Just not on the same wavelength. Tav lost the ball as much as Spence did.

I think Spence is okay defensively and pretty good going forward . As a wide player in a back five he's doing as well as Tav has done in his forward role.

Again, this isn't to criticise Tav - I just can't see where all the negativity for Spence has come from.

Not sure I see the value of singling out a 20 year old prospect for some potentially confidence-busting criticism straight after Boro have just won a game on the road. Exactly how is this thread going to help anyone?
he had a decent game!

some right madheads being read out on bbc radio tees last night. "yes, we won and yes he scored.. and yes he did set up bolasie.. but George Saville is never a footballer.. get rid" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I mean if the players read or hear anything like that.. they must think we are a right pack of divvies!!

Some people can’t go a day without mentioning George Saville. He has his limitations but he also has 5 goals and 4 assists from central midfield. Never hear that when anyone says he’s absolute *****. Up the Sav

my opinion on this is... Spence has not been managed or coached to the standard needed to become a premiership player. Warnock has come in with a host of responsibilities and actions he needs to take. it's a lot to take on and and can slow decision making reactions etc until things become more natural/muscle memory.

with Tavernier he's been dropped in all over the pitch and asked to do a whole host of jobs from winger to dull back to midfielder. I think he's finding his groove now in midfield and will blossom into one hell of a player!

he's a really good player and does really well for us!

he easiest thing in the world is to focus on the £8m price tag.. but that's not down him, that's Pullis and co. £8m becomes a lot less money the more successful the team is.

Spence is becoming one of the club products' youngest write offs, whilst the older but also inconsistent Fry and Tavernier are our youngest world beaters.

Every man and his dog knows we overpaid but that’s what does my head in, that’s not his fault. For an actual championship level centre mid he’s decent enough and chips in with goals and assists. Works hard and isn’t easy on the eye and when he’s poor he’s really poor but I for one like him and think he is a valuable member of the squad and will continue to contribute this season and next.

it's one of them for me, when players are in the think of it any error or mistake gets magnified.. he gets in the thick of it.

"aww he's crap missing 4 shots in a row" - from a defensive midfield position, creating those opportunities - same with interceptions/tackles etc etc.. he's not running the show, players make an action and the rest of the team are there to back up or kick on.

there's a difference between folks wanting him to succeed and not blow his chance and folks criticizing unnecessarily - we won and he did well. say no more. room for improvement.. always.

we've got key players racking up minutes after long layoffs/injury and youngsters grabbing their opportunity by the horns and improving with every game.

that is the difference between a mid table boro and a top six boro. fitness, experience and drive. we're seeing glimmers of it.. hopefully we see the full show!!

I’m sure they do! And I’m equally sure they have a good laugh and take no notice. Which is probably just as well...

I thought he was pretty poor last night. Constantly caught in posession and have the ball away after holding on to it too long in dangerous areas, like in and around the 18 yard box and was pretty anonymous second half. Maybe just a bit rusty but theres a player there for sure. if he really wants to he could succeed. Tav looked a little rusty at times but grew into the game as it went on. Saville has had 4 or 5 good games including last nights cameo. He got the ball in the net but he also mearly missed and i wouldn’t of been surprised of he did. Proper rubbish not because of his price tag but because he’s rubbish. Deservedly dropped and hopefully off in the summer

Agree to disagree dude. Weak link in the side. If we had a player of similar ilk but more athleticism maybe. His passes are five yards to the wrong side snd always slow play down, he hets constantly caught out of possession and gets roasted by anyone with even a sniff of pace. Respect your opinion just not one i share

I agree with everything you say there Scrote but you realise its against the board rules to criticize Tav. As much as I like him(and Spence) he still has his limitations. He is improving with game time and I think Spence would as well. Thought he did ok the other night certainly better than Mendez-Laing has done so far but hopefully there is more to come from him. Just seems Spence is the go to player to have a go at now Clayton has gone.

Except he was a product of Fulhams youth system. Did not come here until 2018-19 season. Did not make his league debut until 2019-20 season when he only played 10 league games. Hardly time to learn how to fasten up his boots never mind come to terms with Championship football.
