Spence & Tavernier

Spence is a shadow of the player he was last year. Maybe that’s coaching or discipline but if he’s not bombing forward we’ve got nothing.
 
Spence doesn’t seem himself does he? Maybe a knock in confidence or something not sure. I think we were not quick enough to jump on QPR’s weaknesses today which was down on Wallace’s side. I thought the Morsy change was good sticking Tav on the side. Spence needs to run at defenders and get the cross in - gave them too much respect today. Still a good point and we move on.

He had multiple opportunities today where he could have ran beyond their LB, not too dissimilar to where he would find himself as a RB but bottled it. He looked so lethargic in everything he did. I agreed with maddo at HT where he said he would tell Jed to just run on the outside and cross, he needs to keep it simple until he finds some form again.
 
Spence is a right back, he needs someone in front to take people away. He only gets passed players when he has momentum so slow from a standing start. Its criminal we are going into a season with a formation built on wing backs without a wing back on either side.
 
Tav put in a perfect cross in the second half today for Britt who should have finished it with a goal. Tav is always a threat and he will improve with age. He is only 21.

Spence needs to become a bit more alert more quickly and make better decisions about when to try and cross. Today there were times when he needed to cross much quicker or take on his first defender quicker. By slightly delaying he allowed more defenders to get in front of him.

He is getting more attention in games now than when he first came into the team and teams are doing their research on him which is making life more difficult for him. He is learning and for the average person it takes time to develop a sense of what is happening around you and what will happen its called experience and anticipation.

Today very little came off for him and it will vary from game to game. To me there is plenty of potential in him to say he will make a very good footballer. He is only just had his 20th birthday.
 
No one is singling him out as a threat as an individual player. Our formation is making him our only avenue as an attack through him or Johnson. Hes so far up that a full back or wide midfield are too close for the type of player he is to be affective. Thats why hes a full back. Critising him when out of position isnt really fair. Or for johnson for that matter.
 
If Spence managed to get 50% of his crosses to beat the first man he would have done well today. I dont recall a single effective cross and he should not feel hard done by in being substituted. I personally dont mind a player with attitude when subbed, but only if they have done something on the pitch. Today he was not productive, and defensively he left Dijksteel Out to dry on numerous occasions. I think that is why we looked better offensively when we went 433. Unfortunately If we are playing wingbacks he has no competition, such is the mismanagement of our squad building recently.
 
Completely agree he was poor but when he broke through he wasnt a wing back and from full back very rarely crossed he ran from deep into the box or go to the byline and cut balls back. He is 20 odd and being asked to play a new position that doesnt suit him or the team. The management is at fault. Same when people criticize johnson for his defending.

Agreed but I don’t blame Warnock. He’s going with a system that best suits what he has to work with. The reality is we don’t have enough quality, we don’t have enough depth, the squad is unbalanced and more importantly we don’t have any money!

We almost have to play this way because of our lack of wingers and our over abundance of central mids in the squad.

TBF we didn’t look bad against 2 of the stronger teams in the league, they would of turned us over last year. Whatever squad Warnock ends up with he will get more out of it and more points than any other manager would.
 
Two proper old-fashioned full backs required.
Wing-backs are great but they need to have a fabulous engine and be very 'aware' positionally.
Unless you have somebody really good at this job don't bother.
We have used them due to central defence 'issues/shortfalls' rather than deliberate policy.
Not totally against the idea but the wing-back needs to be fully briefed.
Woodgate threw on Djksteel as right back in a back 4 and asked him to 'push on' and nearly destroyed him
 
If Spence could actually cross a ball, he'd have been great today, but his deliveries are so poor that he contributes very little.
 
If we're going to persist with wingbacks long term then Spence needs someone new in to challenge him for his place, assuming Dijksteel will continue as a CB in the 3. Djed isn't playing with the swagger and aggression he had last season and I think he could do with having the risk of losing his place if he doesn't improve as currently there is no one.

He's young and will come good though, end up playing for a bigger club than us.

Tav is a funny one, poor so far this season but fantastic back end of last season. I think he is missing having Roberts to play nice football with. He struggles being the main creative force but looked good when he had Roberts to provide the spark for the team. I'm so desperate for us to sign a creative midfielder it's untrue.
