Spain back on the UK banned travel list

i try new stuff all the time.. I wouldn't call "popping to Spain for a 2 week holiday" trying something new...but would I travel now? no and if I did, would I be in the news moaning about it? no as you take your chances, you have to deal with the consequences.
A good point, we get one go at life, don't do the same thing, try new things in life. I've parked going to the pub, nights out, social gatherings, summer holidays.

Instead I'm trying something new, I've picked up my guitar again and am rapidly improving, I've read some books that have been on my to do list for ages, I've passed 3 exams that I needed to do.

I have bought a telescope and produced my first astrophotography images, learning how to align a telescope, find my way around the nightsky and use a toolchain of software to develop acceptable images. All in the safety of my home.

I've spent plenty of time with my kids, listened to new music, exercised (lost 2 1/2 stone), had zoom calls with some old friends in the states that I haven't spoken to in years, repaired my deck and started upgrading my garden.

Lots of new things here, now a 'friend' said it was 'so sad' that I have done this stuff instead of returning to the normal drudge of life, I've booted him of facebook, because that level of stupidity isn't welcome in my life. Lockdown has in many ways been a real stimulus for change. Some people embrace that change, some people are too lazy and just want to do the same old same old with their lives.

I have zero sympathy for people went or are going on holiday.. I travel a lot but decided to not bother this year, as you just don't know what is around the corner. So tough t*ts
So given that you 'travel a lot but decided to not bother this year' when will you feel safe to travel abroad, 1st January 2021?
What are your metrics?
What are your red lines?

And don't say 'when the government tell me it's safe to do so' because they already have.

Saying you have zero sympathy for people and tough t*ts is just spiteful.

You must be a barrel of laughs on a night out.

This is awful for people looking for some respite from lockdown when we were told 'it was safe to get back in the water', and more so for those that booked their hols ages ago before the pandemic. We only tend to book trips abroad a couple of months in advance anyway and we decided back in April not to go abroad this year, maybe not next year either, who knows at this point

Really sickening for those who will lose significant money either from not being able to travel or as a result of quarantining on their return

That is the key point really isn’t it?
Some people have gone on holiday and are getting stuffed. Some will come home to no pay for 2 weeks.
Some people planned a holiday and it has disappeared.
And

Some people come on here and basically say ‘serves them right’.

I remember the days when we clapped for nurses and key workers, when we cared for those shielding. Seemed so much more caring and tolerant then.

I remember the days when those people clapping for nurses didn't give two hoots about key workers, those times seem to have returned again to be honest

I can’t fault anything you said there and applaud your thinking. I have also stopped going to the pub, but did this two years back- I still have a few pints on match days, but are reluctant to spend my full weekends in them anymore. Again, I used the lockdown wisely and furthered my education. I don’t think I have done too bad for someone who refused to attend school. I bet my teachers wouldn’t have thought I would work in one - I didn’t.

My holidays changed about eleven years back and I spend 6 weeks in France. The last five years in the same spot and we have been viewing houses this time. I am hoping to retire here shortly.

This morning I’ve been out on my mountain bike in the countryside and will get the boat out on the lake this evening. We will anchor up, fish a little and catch the last of the evening sun.

We will return after a few hours, shower and have an evening meal on the front.

I might do the same tomorrow, but never get bored of this 😊.

For the sanctimonious on this thread we have to assume you are consigned to being indoors all the time in the UK until this is over.
If some people got their way on this forum we'd be stuck indoors until a vaccine was produced relying on food parcels from the government. 😊

when the infection rate and death rate aren't on the up and not just as we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Do people really have that much a need to go to Spain right now? seriously. then bitch they cannot work for 2 weeks.

and yes I am good on a night out.. I just have no sympathy for idiots ;)

Hope you get it sorted Pete. I've just been through everything for our booking, and I can cancel everything except the flights. I did book recently, though, so I knew the risks, and had some idea this might happen.
Did you book insurance at the time of your original booking? If so, you may well be covered for the fact that you will be forced to cancel due to the pandemic.

We were/are due to go with another family. We have insurance through our bank. They hadn't paid for any insurance yet. Leaves us a bit short of options. We have narrowed it down to three: 1. The quarantine is uturned meaning we go (best case but unlikely), 2. They go but give us some money and we reclaim the deposit from the property leaving both parties a few hundred out of pocket, 3. Our flight get cancelled and we reclaim the whole lot (our insurance covers the villa).

As a great man often said, it is what it is.

Yep, doesn't take long before we return to our default position of looking after one's self and having no empathy. Sickening really.

Could easy have caught it on your last day or even on the flight home so a test wouldnt pick this up if tested at the airport. Totally feasible to test negative at the airport but then be positive a few days later, possibly infecting people at work etc before you realise. At least with a 14 day isolation it takes away that risk.

This. According to all the available data, the median incubation period for SARS-CoV-2 is 4 to 6 days but it can take up to 14 days. That, coupled with the well-established risk of asymptomatic transmission, is the reason for a 14-day isolation period.

Looks like Spain are going to ask us to remove the islands from the quarantine list.
I really wish they would. I know the Balearics are only a couple of hours by ferry from Barcelona, but so is Perpignan and nothing stopping people going there and flying back.
The canaries are so far from Spain. Borders and the sovereignty of the island shouldn’t matter, because viruses don’t care about that. The fact they are miles from mainland Spain does matter. It makes more sense to also quarantine people from France than it does from the canaries .

It’s not quite “serves them right” more that they knew the risks. It’s going to be like this for some time with flare ups and lockdowns around the globe. I don’t begrudge anyone travelling. It’s just they must have known the risk? You leave your own countries borders during a pandemic and you must know there is a chance you’ll either be trapped there or have to isolate. That’s fine if you need your holiday, I’d like to get away myself. You just must know the risks and have to calculate that in. It’s hard to have sympathy with people in Spain know complaining about not being able to work when they get back. They must have known the possibility of this
