Southgate's time at the Boro: 'six bad weeks'

Problem with strachan was that he badly over estimated how good Scottish football was compared to even the championship as he put together on paper an old firm dream team with the likes of Boyd McManus robson flood killen etc.

But it just highlighted how poor Scottish football is/was.
We didn't get our first choice picks.. even the ones from the SPL. Strachan covered his ineptitude with arrogance.

I thought Boyd was his top ?

who were the top then ( not doubting just interested as I didn’t know that.

Tbf I thought Boyd and Thomson were great signings and wasn't surprised we were promotion favourites in 2010/11......didn't quite work out though!

Finally got round to reading the article. What was interesting was that Gibson implied that the 2007 crash dictated everything, whereas I think most had assumed a cost-cutting exercise had been needed even before that, and that it was a silly thing to task Southgate with.

He did do ok in his first season, perhaps without the financial crash things would have been very different but the fact is he made some terrible signings to replace club legends like Schwarzer and Viduka and didn't seem to have the players playing for him for the final 18 months of his time in charge. It was definitely more than 6 bad weeks!

And yes, I'd reached the point where I felt we needed rid asap and even saw Strachan as an upgrade. I couldn't say for certain that Southgate would have kept us in the top 6 that year, so I'm not even gonna say I got it wrong, albeit Strachan turned out to be rubbish as well.

One thing the Woodgate episode did, for me, was settle the debate that went on for years about who was worse - Strachan or Southgate. For me, Woody was worse than both, as our manager. I hope he goes on to do well somewhere else, but doesn't change the fact that he eclipsed them both here imho.

Both we’re massive disappointments Boyd was the softest ‘big lad’ striker I’ve ever seen. Thompson just never looked the part.. he was no Malaury Martin that’s for sure!

What is this based on then, great manager really.

let’s see how he handles the best England squad in a generation this summer before throwing phrases like great manager around.
as much as i like Southgate, I think if you look at the games when it matters mot England still lose, and I am not sure that will change this summer. Hope it does, would love to see a young England team win something and then hopefully build on that for the world cup, which we should be holding. FIFA could do with correcting some of the corrupt actions of the likes of Blatter by awarding us a world cup again.
While we were 4th in Championship when Gareth was sacked gthe three games we lost at home we were dire and sorely lacking in fight. We were relegated from the Prem with spineless performances and this was being seen in the championship.

Agree that he is possibly better suited to a national team roile than a club role.

The Scots that came in struggled that was for sure. Except Barry Robson and to some extent Scott M.

Boyd was too slow and lacked much movement. The ball had to be put on a plate for him - then a good finisher. Thomson was injured a lot and when he returned opposition players just ran past him. McManus was a bit of a car horse, Flood always injured. Miller just too poor all round. The Old Firm players look better in Scotland because they are basically playing English Division 1 teams week in and out.

Willo Flood was our entire creative attacking threat. He suffered an horrific knee dislocation that put end end to that. Meanwhile Emnes and Bennett had been chucked on the scrap heap because ‘they weren’t real men’ or something.. he should have been fired for that alone!!

Dreadful, disgusting manager.
