Southgate departing....

My five pence worth, as this thread has been really interesting and quite poignant. And I’m never quite sure how I feel about him as England manager.

I’ve been critical of Gareth in the past but there’s no doubt he’s been the most successful of all England managers by far apart from Sir Alf. (It will always be about a win)

Not only has GS surprised me with his acumen, vision and results from when he was first appointed, he has helped modernise the England set up, he’s protected the players and taken the flack himself and he’s been a true gentleman while doing it. And pretty media savvy. And lucky ;)

He’s also been less flexible than we would have liked, slow to react and fallen in the age old ‘play your best players, not a system’ trap, particularly this Euros

But he has given us some fantastic nights, some great results; a new, renewed pride in the national team. An expectation we can compete in, and even win, major competitions.

He can leave with his head held high and the national team in a great position. Top player, top man. I hope he has a lovely year off :)

The next guy will get the same treatment. We have suddenly become entitled to win a tournament. For years we could never do better than Germany, Holland, Italy, Portugal, France etc.

We were much worse than that, in the 5 tournaments pre Southgate we’d won zero knockout games. We were doing worse than the likes of Iceland, Czech Republic, Wales, Turkey, Bolivia, Costa Rica, USA, Ivory Coast, that’s where we were.

He made exactly the right decision to go and he brought stability and pride back. Not a great coach but an excellent manager. I am not sure if he will make a very good Premier League manager. Good luck to him if he tries though.
That's it for me too. He's put together a better, more inclusive set up for international football and he's benefitted from the improved quality of player due to the actions of foreign coaches bringing new ideas to the domestic game.

He could be a great director of football, even for the national set up. His match management is where he's struggling.

That's my luddite thinking

I think Southgate had input in St. George’s and in insisting continuity throughout age groups too.

I honestly think the commitment to football he had which was lauded by Walk it in the net Wenger himself but ultimately got us relegated had an impact on him.

Seemed to become very, very pragmatic at cautious at times. At boro, different, could be naivety but of course our experiences influence our practice.

FA will appoint Carsley with the cover story that they’re aiming for Pep.
After a couple of wins all of a sudden Carsley will be permanent and Pep conveniently forgotten about.
I see through their plan.
Tbf, I think Carsley is actually fairly well regarded as a coach. Would probably seem like an uninspiring appointment on paper vs. 'a name', but I wouldn't be totally against it.

He’s basically already done that

It’s called England DNA and goes from grass roots to senior international for men and women. defining a type of player and how to train them to be that, to work in a specific footballing philosophy.

He has done it, and perhaps should keep it going, leaving a decent coach to concentrate on the senior side.

I know we'll not agree on this but like many, many others who have spent a long time playing, watching or being involved in other capacities, that he is better away from match management.

And many people who have spent time playing watch and coaching think he is a very good manager, so no we won’t agree

Well some people are swayed by them and some are luddites. These people do exist in society, brexit proved that
And many of those people will be happy with the job Southgate has done and want him to carry on.

Seeing Southgate's continuation as halting progress is hardly being a Luddite.

I’d wager that far more brexiteers wanted Southgate out than remainers. Sadly that’ll be a bet we can’t prove.

Well at least you’ve admitted there’s been progress……..although I’m not sure that probably our second best win ever beating the number 7 nation in the world away from Wembley in a semi final, leading to only our third ever final, is what I would call “halting progress”.

I would’ve loved him to carry on because he is everything I want from a leader. He has principles and he stands up for what he thinks is right. I’m very proud of him, of the fact he was our captain and is etched in our history. Who cares about a relegation. The bloke lifted silverware. Some things are more important. At the end of my lifetime, when I asses things, Gareth will be part of that. You can’t ask for any more.

Good luck to the man. He deserves a break and to be treated well. We’ll do well to reach the heights we’ve reached under him. I think we could well go one step further but who can say. But we do know that Gareth has been absolutely f*cking brilliant for Boro and for his country. I love him.

Yes 👍

Yeah fair enough. I think he could be good too.
I’d respect it more if they came out and said that though.
Their MO is more like sounding him out before publicly backing him while papers talk up ‘bigger’ managers
