Souness saying fa replays be gone in 2 to 3 years

I thought the idea was to protect the early round replays? I don't think its a big thing if we lose them for the final/semis etc. In fact I thought we had already.

Talking about how good the prem is and how it’s more important about not diluting the prem product.

Seems he’s forgot his roots then

We have from the 5th round onwards.

A sad day if they get rid altogether especially for the smaller clubs. Teams like Bolton Blackpool and Bristol City relishing getting Prem clubs back to their places.

People forget that the FA take a decent chunk of gate receipts which goes towards the prize money and the general running of the game in this country. Wonder if at some point the loss of replays would impact that.

It's not the PL wanting a winter break that is the problem. It's the extra dates on the European schedule putting a squeeze on the domestic calendar. That's why I say it's pointless scrapping the League Cup like some people want to do as it would just encourage UEFA to make an even bigger grab for match days.

Massive revenue stream gone for the lower clubs if so.

That could kill the pyramid as when else will notts county get an old Trafford style gate tv money etc.
I don't necessarily think money should be the driving factor for making a decision. We've scrapped replays and multi-leg ties because they are mostly unnecessary and instead of thinking about club finances maybe we should be thinking about fan finances because replays means fans paying more money to attend matches. Do we have a satisfactory way of resolving a tie that ends up in a draw after 90 mins? I think extra time and penalties does that. I've never been happy coming away from a cup match that we have drawn and I still think back to how weird it was leaving Wembley in 97 after Heskey's goal.

If money going to a small number of lower league cups is the primary factor for retaining replays then maybe they need to come up with a different model for allocating gate receipts. Maybe 50% of every club's gate receipts are pooled and then split between all the teams in that round. That benefits more clubs because matches like Maidstone v Stevenage at the weekend will get a bigger payday for reaching round 3 instead of having to rely on being drawn away at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.

It's an open secret that they're scrapping them from the third round onwards next season.
So it's only clubs from League One and below that will have replays going forwards.

It will happen because the big clubs dont like it.

Rather than trying to come up with a new rule/format to suit the top clubs, perhaps they should play their strongest XI if they want it over in one game rather than swapping and changing and then moaning when they draw.

It's a crying shame.

Only this weekend you had Brentford's manager moan about replays.

Brentford.

And yet. they are probably one of many many clubs that used to rely on cup income years ago.

Some of these managers/clubs in the top flight really do need a reality check.

Then again, the FA Cup coverage has been shambolic too.

ITV & BBC are part of the problem. and don't help the lower teams.

No one wanted to watch PL teams face each other....again.

Give me:
West Brom v Aldershot,
Plymouth v Sutton,
Blackburn v Cambridge,
Watford v Chesterfield,
Maidstone v Stevenage,
Coventry v Oxford
Nottingham Forest v Blackpool

over the likes of

Spurs v Burnley,
Palace v Everton,
Arsenal v Liverpool.

Even 'Boro v Villa.

The PL teams will get their own way - they always do.....which will come at the expense of teams in L1 or lower.

To be fair, a replay would have been an awful result for us against Villa! An extra game midweek, the week between the two Chelsea games. It almost feels like losing in 90 mins was better than drawing.
I can understand the argument to get rid.

I said that we’d have potentially back to back villa Chelsea it would have been horrific on the squad.

So why are they allowing the PL teams to have a split break over two weekends?

This is what Thomas Frank is whinging about and Klopp mentioned about not wanting a draw, the PL teams that drew in the 3rd round don't get the break that those who went through are getting.

These lads all want to play in the PL and then want to change the rules to suit them. It is high time we told them no and thought about the smaller clubs.

Some of my best memories of the FA cup are from replays. Man U during the 70's power cuts, Man City, Wolves, Wimbledon, Bishop Stortford, Wycombe Wanderers, Portsmouth and who can forget the Everton trilogies?

I know things have moved on but it doesn't harm for some things to remain the same.

Yes, they did. There are millions of them. They sit on their settees whenever there's a game on and absolutely love these games. They are the sort that barely recognise that there's anything other than the Premier League. They are the ones who always describe themselves as a "massive *insert name of overly-entitled 'big' club here* fan" when they appear on quiz shows or radio 'phone-ins. They are the ones who never stop going on about the "footie" at work but think you are a bit odd because you actually go to live games. We all know them.

Not bothered if they do away with replays. Was gutted having been to Wembley when heskey scored and realised I wouldn't be able to get a ticket for the replay. Think it gives smaller teams more of a chance, like us knocking out Utd last year. Also means managers are less likely to sack it off and play the kids in the cup because we are in with an outside chance of making the play offs.
