Hopefully he can impress pre-season.

Interesting, hopefully does well in pre season and the first couple of friendlies and earns his place saving us a fortune in the process.
Do you think that it implies he's being given a shot at becoming our number one?

Or is 'a chance to fight for a place' meaning that he'll be in the first team squad and able to compete with the other back-up for cup starts and the place on the bench?

Or could it mean he replaces Roberts?

I think it does, if we stick him on the bench all season it will massively stunt his development, I think it’s basically Carrick saying il give you a chance in pre season impress me and you may get the shirt, if not and he doesn’t look quite ready he will likely go on loan towards the end of the window albeit League 1 this time.

Great news. I wonder what he's like with his feet? I imagine that's a massive part of how well he will do under Carrick.

We've clearly watched him and no doubt had good reports back. The fact he played every league game and played of the season shows how good a loan it was. Infact he's apparently impressed in all his loans.

He deserves a chance. It saves us a few quid. Also if he really kicks on and becomes No1. Then a young first choice English GK is definitely a sellable 'asset'

I expect him to be the No2. I'm not sure where that leaves Roberts. I would be suprised if we don't bring in a more experienced prem GK as No1. I'm sure he'd love Steffen back. Yet at 10mil and 80k a week highly unlikely

I didnt see any of brynns games but giving him a 4 year deal suggests the recruitment team and carrick are epecting good things from him, why do we need an experienced keeper if he is deemed good enuf, the deckchairs faired well with patterson, keepings a strange position were confidence is very important dont see why he cant be the answer saving us cash for outfield players

Excellent news this, think it's a case of impress this pre season and he's the number one OR head out on loan to a top league one/bottom half championship side.

Personally I hope he impresses enough and becomes our number one. Its been so long since we've had a settled keeper

City only paid £7m for him, and it didn't really work out as they hoped, so they would probably take less, they might even write it off if it got rid of the wages, as he's clearly never going to get a look in there.

He's got two years left on his 80k deal, which we obviously can't match but city may pay some if we take him off their hands.

He's probably not going to get another contract near 80k when this one runs out when he's 30, which he probably realises.

I'm not sure how reliable this is, but I don't expect it to be far off: https://www.spotrac.com/epl/rankings/goalkeeper/

There are like 50 keepers in the prem as starters/ backups, and only ~10 are on more than Steffen ~£4/m a year, so even if he got a starting prem move, then he's probably not going to be on more than £2m, which is around no 20 on the list. Who of them actually needs a keeper though, as well, most seem to be quite well covered?

A deal for Steffen might not be as far away as a lot of us expect?

Agree with this.

Assuming he IS on £80k a week, then none of the clubs in the market for him will be able to come anywhere near matching it.

He might go to a PL club, maybe a Luton tyre club, in which case he may maximise his earning power, but otherwise he's looking at a European club or championship.
