My bigger fear on the main issue is that this is playing into the hands of those with the agenda of destroying the corporation. In the days of Jimmy Hill, we would not have known his views on immigration policy because he would’ve needed a newspaper article to express them and wouldn’t have had one and because he would have been a direct employee, and so could’ve been stopped. When the Tories (hard to believe now I know) got Rod Liddle sacked for being rude about the countryside alliance 20 years ago it was again in a newspaper article.
That aspect of the old BBC model doesn’t work in the social media era. But this row will be used as an excuse to suggest that the old BBC model cannot be made to work at all, and that it must be destroyed. I think we will regret what has been started here.
