So the PPE we where waiting for from Turkey was deemed useless

Another unacceptable disaster from this government who have admitted that most of the PPE (that they raved about coming) has been quarantined, due to it not being of the correct standards. Buying from a country who are known to supply poor quality goods, and are trying to make a quick buck and capitalize on the pandemic, has come right back and bit them on the ar$e.

It was sat in an airport hold for 4 days before the RAF picked it up, why didn’t we get someone out there to do an ‘acceptance check’ prior to it being loaded onto the plane?

An absolute waste of money and time 😩

Just when you think a government can’t be anymore inept, they come up with another beauty !!

Hand on.... normally it’s the supplier that would take the blame if they goods are faulty not the purchaser. A couple of weeks back the Turks were heroes with their donation of PPE. What happened to that?

Next time you purchase something and it’s faulty. Don’t bother returning it as it’s your fault for purchasing it in the 1st place. I bet you don’t though

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis said it was "reassuring" that British experts were "ensuring the best quality of equipment".

Words fail me.

How can ANYONE think this government is doing a even a moderately competent job? It's just one fukk up after another and if it wasn't for the trail of corpses it would be almost funny. "Carry On Up Whitehall"

Jeezus.

if I was buying kit for £ millions, not pennies, I would have someone at the factory checking it was to the right and agreed specifications, and then also at the airbase when it was being loaded onto the aircraft to check again and for any damage that might have occurred.

On this occasion you can’t defend the indefensible!!

You can bet your life (literally) that the below-standard gear will find it's way onto the marketplace, knocked out on the cheap by Arthur Daley characters

Meanwhile the civil servant responsible for the purchase will shrug their shoulders and dip into the bottomless moneypit of taxpayers money, and simply source some more, although hopefully of a better standard this time

Got to agree.

Really? Its not buying from your local supermarket, with the benefit of consumer rights legislation.

When sourcing PPE the basic requirement is that it meets the minimum standard. I can only think that the government were under so much pressure for their inept handling of the PPE issue that any sort of quality assurance was ignored in favour of the headline, thereby releasing some public and media pressure.

And as for the Turkish supplier, the standard may be acceptable there, its anyones guess

Totally agree 👍

When you are playing around with people’s lives you really ought to be better than - ahhh, it is the suppliers fault.
Especially as we have no idea of the specification offered, ordered v delivered.

Ridiculous comparison - we're not talking about some £10 purchase from Amazon here. If I wanted to buy something very expensive, and to a defined specification and standard, I'd do some research, talk to the potential supplier, and ask for references and previous customers. Any decent supplier should have been able to provide manufacturing specifications before the order was placed and quality control documentation before delivery

Surely the spec was deemed correct by the NHS specialists. I wouldn't buy a car without giving it the once over first or send a blind man to have a look at it for me, so to speak.

Turkish supplier now saying that the stuff is certified in both material and manufacture. Not sure to what standard. Also saying they've had no contact about it from HMG. Which, given the recent difficulties with losing e-mails, sounds credible.

This situation is the result, for whatever reason, of Johnson's refusal to join the EU purchasing scheme. Ludicrous decision.

Would that be this EU scheme?

With EU countries hit by personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages, the European Commission hoped a Brussels-led procurement drive would complement national plans to increase the production of medical equipment. But Commission officials have conceded governments who have placed orders through the programme will still have to wait weeks for any deliveries. “For some PPEs, deliveries are possible within weeks following the placing of the order,” a spokesman said.
