Sliding Doors Moments

As fans we often talk about the Heskey goal or not turning up at Blackburn, but what if Scolari takes the England job, what happens to us then?

We’ve just finished runners up in the UEFA Cup, made the semi finals of the FA Cup and still have a very hungry Steve McLaren in charge

Sacking one of the top two (not realised at the time) England managers when we were fourth in the league and ( I think) one point from top. Think it took seven years to get back to a similar position with Karanka, and I don’t think ever since.

All good examples, but I was wondering what people’s thoughts were if Scolari gets the England job and McLaren stays with us

The sacking of Southgate was very odd, considering the league position we were in (although we'd played more games).
I can't remember now if that was a reaction to fan's condemnation or something else

Possible that McClaren would have had the clout to say "Sure about that?" when someone suggests getting a French guy called Digard in as the solution to filling a Boateng sized gap.

That’s kind of what I think, I’m not sure we make some of the decisions regarding signings that we did under Gareth if McLaren is in charge

I’m basically saying I don’t think we sign Mido under McLaren

It’s one of those events that make you realise the majority of fans are just emotionally reactionary and shouldn’t be used as a gauge for strategic decision making

What I didn’t say in my post about Southgate is that as someone who is always loyal to managers and players, including Carrick, I actually thought sacking Southgate was right. In hindsight I was wrong, I think.

Southgate was sacked because we got battered 5 nil by WBA at the Riverside. We were woeful in that game. Gibson didn't pull the trigger until after the next game which was against Derby and we won 1-0, which made it seemingly strange to get the bullet after a victory.

The problem is Gibson sacked Southgate and we didn't get promoted and have been stuck in the championship for 19 years out of 20 supporters are getting sick now.

Southgate should have been sacked in January 2009.

If McClaren had stayed in 2006, I’ve no doubt we’d have signed better players. He may have kept Yakubu happier, he may have convinced Viduka to sign another deal or Gibson to spend more money on him. He may have insisted we don’t lose Schwarzer.

It’s quite possible we could have stayed in the PL for quite a bit longer, BUT McClaren had also lost a lot of popularity by 2006. I did a “sliding doors” thread recently about him potentially getting sacked after the 0-4 v Villa when we were battling relegation.

I suspect McClaren might have taken another job eventually anyway, and Southgate will have still ended up in charge.

Thats a great point about the Villa game amd what might have happened if he’d been sacked then

Three points deduction was a disgrace.
Imagine if they applied the same rule during the pandemic when every club had to postpone games for exactly the same reason?
A virus infecting the entire first team is a valid reason to cancel a game but the football authorities disagreed.
They felt the club should have either forced sick people to work or field men against boys with all the risks that would bring.
It was wrong wrong wrong and made a mockery of our game sending a clear message that profit was more important than the game itself.
They had sold the tickets, ordered the pies, the TV cameras were ready. How dare we put football and the safety of our players before that.
For me that was a closing doors moment not just for our club but for English football.

You never sack a manager because of one terrible performance regardless how bad

Sliding doors moments...how about replacing Southgate for an experienced manager who could have kept Boro in the Premiership or got us promoted when we had some money.

Putting Agnew an inexperienced coach who had never managed before in the middle of a relegation Premiership dog fight

Appointing Woodgate who looked totally out his depth.

Mangers who were past their best and played cave man football in Warnock and Pulis.

Spending the money on terrible players which put us back years with Monk (who had no promotion seasons to his name as a manager)

Most clubs who come down, try and keep the spine of the team from the Premiership they had, it's usually good enough to get them back up, its a bit of a risk as you are paying big wages and can run close to FFP.....we sold practically all our best players when we came down and replaced them with crap with a poor manager...the footballing decisions at our club have been mental.

Appointing Southgate. We were UEFA cup finalists. High profile and appont Gibbo appoints an unqualified rookie manager.
Right manager, wrong time. Totally wrong rime
To
Appoint him. He was as rookie as you could get, zero coaching badges, hadn’t even coached youth level
