Slade at the BBC

Back in about 1980/81 I DJ'd every Saturday night in the working men's club next door to the Rock Garden, so would hear all the bands sound checking at about 6.30 - 7pm, while I was setting up the gear. I have a vivid memory of hearing Slade bouncing through the walls with Gudbuy t'Jane and wishing I was at their gig rather than playing stuff I mostly hated to people getting steadily pi55ed while waiting for the bingo to start!
 
A little later in their career. Still an amazing band, especially live. Got to see them at Dunelm College Durham in the earl 80's. Don't think my hearing has recovered yet.

I think that was part of liking them - dressing as a skinhead (without the haircut), monkey boots, stay press 2 tone trousers, Ben Sherman or Fred Perry shirt, braces, Harrington jacket or Crombie coat depending on the time of year.

Edit: I have certainly got the haircut now.

 
Saw them a few times at the Rock Garden, at the Fiesta but the best for me was at the Redcar Jazz Club when they had Play It Loud out. Still my favourite album by then. They were supposed to be supporting DaDa who included Robert Palmer, Elkie Brookes and Pete Gage in the line up(this was before they changed their name to Vinegar Joe. Anyway Slade had problems with their van and got delayed so DaDa came on first and Slade ended up closing the night. Remember they played a new song that was coming out in a few months/weeks(whatever). Get Down Get With It and the rest as they say was history.

Strangely enough I didn't record that last night as it was mainly TOTP stuff I think. I did record the documentary about Woodstock and one about The Beatles that followed the Slade program.
 
I was in Norfolk when the adverts for Nobby’s Nuts came out and was walking up the road with my wife and son (aged around 7). Anyway, a van goes past advertising Nobby’s Nuts and out of the blue for a laugh I set off chasing it shouting ‘Noddy.’ The van stopped and a great big bloke gets out and tells me to ‘F Off.’ I had to walk back to the wife and boy slightly red faced and them laughing at me.
