Six biggest Championship clubs

The thing people are taking issue with is the use of the word "Biggest", which is an arbitrary term without a clear definition.
It's why words matter. If they had said 6 most successful clubs in each division, then there would be no debate. Using the term biggest, infers more than just most historically successful

There is no way Preston are bigger better more illustrious or whatever you want to call it than us.

Non

If football ended for good tomorrow, and people looked back in 100 years time, Preston would rightly be ranked above us, because they won more.

We are currently a better supported, better performing and wealthier club than them, and have been for decades, for sure, but that's not the same as having won more.

It's not a strange list.
It's a very simple and accurate list with a clear criteria.

The thing people are taking issue with is the use of the word "Biggest", which is an arbitrary term without a clear definition.

If we were to use all time average attendances, we are 2nd biggest in the Championship.
If we were to use an all time top flight points total, we're the 5th biggest in the Championship and there are 3 teams in League One that are bigger than us.

But both of those data points are also relying on "ancient history" to keep us afloat on those tallies.

We've spent 61 seasons in the top flight, 46 of them were before I was born, so clearly they don't count by the logic used by some on here.

Only 4 teams currently in the Championship have won a trophy since I was born.
Nottingham Forest haven't achieved a single thing since I was born in 1992, I doubt any person would argue that Swansea are a bigger club because they've won something whilst I was alive, they're not, but that's largely because the middle aged and older posters on here won't see something that happened 42 years ago as ancient history, despite it being just as irrelevant to today's standings.

I'm sure many will be the same posters that will rightly argue that football started before the Premier League.
History is history, recent or not.
So under your criteria Preston are a bigger club than Brighton, Crystal palace and West Ham :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I'd say comfortably, they've spent as much time in the bottom two leagues in the last 40 years as not. We've spent 2 seasons ever.

We've got bigger crowds comfortably, had bigger signings, more internationals, bigger name managers, won a trophy in living memory, had multiple cup finals and semi finals, a european final. In the modern era we are much 'bigger' than both. Even in this last crappy decade, I would still say we are bigger than them, and that's taking us at our low, and them at a high point.

Our fans do like to play us down. Have a bit of pride lads.
Totally agree with that, Boro fans like to make out that we're a much smaller club than we are. There's absolutely no comparison to be made in terms of Boro vs Preston and Huddersfield. We're a far bigger club through every metric aside from trawling way back through the history books.

I would've thought the biggest clubs would look something llike (in no particular order)
Boro
Forest
Derby
Sheff Utd
Blackburn

with a bit of a debate over 6th spot

Edit: forgot West Brom, they'd probably be in there.

To an extent, yes, but if you're ignoring history then the only definition being used is attendances.

Forest haven't won anything since 1990, and haven't been in the top flight since 1999, people will still rank them above Swansea and Birmingham City, despite both winning something within the last decade and playing in the top flight in this century.

There'd still be a debate because according to that list Spur's charity shield wins count the same as Villa's league titles and European Cup win.

There's absolutely no doubt Villa have a more successful history than Spurs.

Yeah, that's the one thing I'd take issue with on the list.

Super Cups are a load of ***** and aren't real trophies, whether it be the Community Shield or the UEFA Super Cup.
I'd also exclude any invitational trophies.

Historically bar 2 brief dips of our toe we have been in this countries top 2 divisions throughout our entire history and have never once played in its lowest tier ever and we were even a founding member of the premier league.

For the record, I don't think any of the clubs in that list of 6 are currently particularly bigger* than Middlesbrough.

*I.e more relevant or successful in my lifetime.

But I'm also not bothered if people think they are, you don't win anything just because people think you're big.

Struggling to see why this should exercise me?

Our bigly big biggness is big bigly bigger than your bigly big biggyness, nyah nyah nayh. Ho hum.

Rather than looking back wouldn't it be better to project forward.

Imagine if during the next 100 years Huddersfield/Preston finished every season in 20th position in League 2 and we finished 2nd in the Premier League every season.

Huddersfield/Preston would still be a bigger club than us !!!! Yeah right

Btw my issue isn’t with some no mark list I could care less it’s when other boro fans play us down that annoys me as yes we’re not Barcelona but we’re not Barnsley either.
