Sir Keir Starmer self-isolating

If hes got from the kids at school it will be interesting. Given borises pathetic schools rant

I am really struggling with what to think of Starmer at the moment. More than happy to admit that I was a big fan of Corbyn and being a bit younger than most on here, I genuinely saw him as someone that could have made a change to people similar to my age but certainly to generations even younger than me. Whilst the Corbyn era is now over, one thing that I learned in that time is that it is important (to me anyway) to vote for politics you believe in and not just blindly vote for a particular party.

That is where I am now struggling with Starmer, I wanted nothing more than a Labour government at the last election because I genuinely (rightly or wrongly) believed that it would bring about positive change for people that needed it the most. I dont see that with Starmer, I see someone who is good in front of a mic as witnessed by his 'forensic' dissection of Johnson at PMQ's on several occasions but what does he stand for? It feels like for me personally, pretty much every decision I would have wanted him to make since taking over he has done the opposite so i'm finding it harder and harder to warm to him as a leader. The following link shows his record since taking over as leader and whilst im happy to accept that some of the points can be seen to have a slight bias or hint of opinion, the overarching actions are not of someone that I feel like I could really get out there and back.

What do you reckon to this guy? Is a Leader is he credible opposition to the Tories?
yes, he's far smarter than any of the Tory cabinet, seems a decent bloke, with good morals. He's soft left which is far more electable than Corbyn, he sticks to facts and reality and I think the public will soon enough say 'enough of the bull**** Boris, to your gang of turds and get out'

Surely you would wait for a manifesto and then make up your mind?

Surely you would wait for a manifesto and then make up your mind?

Yeah you are right Lodger, thats what I would do and its what I tried to persuade people to do leading up to GE19 when I felt we had a really strong manifesto.

Suppose I was almost thinking out loud in response to the initial point around what people think about him.

A leader keeping things boringly ticking over without major drama's should no longer be under appreciated after the last 5 years, in my opinion.
Exactly. He hasn't tried to make it all about himself, spending tens of millions on bridges that won't be built or water canons which can't be used.

Ken - changed the skyline, he greenlit the building of most of the skyscrapers you see in the city, was involved in Barney's with Blair over the tube. Used the office mainly to attack new labour. Brought in bendy buses.

Boris - brought in route masters to replace bendy buses - a stupid idiotic waste of money on something utterly irrelevant but which made headlines (come up with your own punchline). Brought in Boris bikes and improved the cycle network. Oversaw the Olympics. Used the office to promote self.

Khan - kept the ticket offices open on the tube. Involved in twitter spats with trump. Used the office to promote self.

I know it's said partly in jest but I think Khan's inaction is more akin to Nero fiddling away than anything positive. I mean Grenfell happened on his watch. We have a massive housing crisis in this city. The crisis was caused by inaction.

The twitter spat with Trump was initiated by Trump, was racist, factually incorrect and damaging to the city he was mayor of. He had to respond and I thought he did so in quite a dignified way.

Sorry are you laying the blame at Khan for Grenfell?

Realistically though, you can't hope to be leader with 4 years without people forming opinions on you in that time. There's plenty of campaigning that Labour could and should be doing in the meantime.

The Boris bikes were Livingston's idea.

This country will never get a very left leaning govt in power in my lifetime,if ever at all. Starmer like Blair is as good as it gets. Moderate and thats what will see Labour into power. Its a long way off so he hasnt to over expose himself. Its not hard at the moment with this lump in charge. Its Cummings who we need to undo, his spiv activists on here have done nowt but cry.

With the context of the previous sentence it seems obvious to me that SJB isn't blaming Khan for Grenfell, just saying that he's faffed on with pointless stuff (like Twitter) instead of reacting to it. There is still heaps of buildings that still have cladding down here I think.

Does anyone even know what Starmer's beliefs are? What motivates him? When Corbyn was leader he had to be seen to be providing opposition at all times or face criticism and still he faced a leadership challenge within 9 months of becoming leader. We know nothing of Starmer other than that he is financed by wealthy Israelis (which he kept hidden until after the leadership election) and that he is dragging the party to the right.

I believe that the right wing media and the billionaires have the Labour leader that they want.

I think in the end Corbyn was the leader the billionaires and right wing media wanted, though he gave them an almighty shock for a while.

As for Starmer, I think his legal career can tell you a lot.

I'm not laying the blame for Grenfell with Khan. But I'm wanting to see him raise hell. I'm wanting to see him take action. A bunch of people burned to death in his city in their won homes, millions live in terrible housing conditions and they still haven't removed the cladding.
