Is Middlesbrough the worst signposted place in Britain, you have to be practically here before you see a signpost for Middlesbrough.I know you get signposts for Teesside but Newcastle gets signs never Tyne and Wear.

I like the Teesside signs. That word covers the whole region. Fair enough you probably have to have a basic idea of UK geography to understand Middlesbrough is in Teesside, but i like that we get Teesside and you don't see Merseyside, Tyneside, Wearside etc (y)

I would never say I lived in Teesside and wouldn't think many people would know where it was. More people have heard of Middlesbrough through the football club.

Teesside was only in existance between 1968 and 1974 so I imagine a few on here have it on their birth certificate, maybe that's why it lives on ?

A friend of mine from Ripon always mentioned the lack of signs for Middlesbrough and said he was never sure of the exact location of it until he moved up here. I think it is something like 14 miles south of Middlesbrough before there is a sign for it.

Personally, I think Teessides been used more since Houchen became mayor.

Edit: I would never join in singing Teessiders at the footy and always disliked that description of our area. South of the river we are from North Yorkshire. ;)

Teesside is a postcode - to assist the postie to deliver your mail.

other than that its right up there with Narnia, Nirvana and never-never land.

The Looking Glass Land - with Whitby-on-Tees

and there is the same amount of road-signs for Middlesbrough on approaching motorways etc as there is for any other small town with 125,000 people.

Coming out of sunderland on the A1018 there used to be a sign just before the harvester which read Middlesbrough 25 Teesside 24

What always gets me coming out of York on the A19 is a sign telling you how many miles it is to Hartlepool!

When I used to live in Pools always found that reassuring but always wondered why!
I thought maybe the sign maker was having a private joke and has been there for as long as I can remember.
Think it says 57 miles but in brackets as not actually on the A19

It makes some sense because the A19 from the A1(M) doesn't go to Stockton or Middlesbrough, it goes to the A66 and then it's the same distance in either direction. If they put Middlesbrough on then they'd have to have Stockton at the same time so it's easier to just put Teesside.

Lately they have been signposting Middlesbrough 50 mins J49 on the matrix signs on the A1(m) at Ferrybridge. Not sure if they are pitching this at the returning thousands from.Boro away matches. That is when I have seen this signed this year.
