Should heading be banned in football?

The game would fall apart though surely? Long hoofs up field and the defenders have to let it bounce! Mind you latte would get even more than he currently does if the was the case 🤣

On a serious note I don't know the answer, obviously studies are showing it can be bad for players in later life and their safety is paramount. I don't think I'd enjoy that version of football as a spectator though.

Don't think the game would fall apart but it would become unrecognisable to what we watch at the moment. Teams will adapt and it would actually be fun watching the chaos for a few seasons as it came into play. Remember 80's keepers trying to get to grips with the back pass rule!!

I've always been a bit against it but the more and more that you read about it I think it's inevitable.

I could see it banned in training, not so much in games. What would be given if it was, a header in the box by a defender and it’s a penalty? Indirect free kicks.
Corners would either be strange or scrapped.

It's banned in children's football up to a certain age. I don't think it's a huge step to move that to adult football - however it would be a totally different game. There would be limited point having taller players other than the goalie for example.

In kids footie its an indirect freekick on the edge of the box I think. Not a penalty

I don't know whether it will be banned but maybe something brought in where there is a limit of how many times a player can head the ball in the match. At that point he rather has to get subbed off or free kicks are given every time the player heads it after his header limit. I'm not sure how that would work either and who would count but it's the best I can come up with 🤣

I’m sure in the future technology will come up with a design of a football that is less damaging to the brain.

It's the repeated heading in training that does the most damage.

P
Part of the problem with just banning heading in training is that heading is a skill, just like shooting, passing etc. Even if theoretically banned in training there would be clubs (or certainly players) who did it anyway to give them an advantage in games.

It would make it essentially a different sport to the one played for over 100 years at that point. Heading has been that fundamental a part of the game.

I can't see it being banned while boxing is still legal.

I'm trying to imagine some kind of head guard to reduce the harm, but I admit I'm finding it hard to imagine.

There was a good piece on Radio 5 this morning featuring Judith Gates and Dave Parnaby. It's worth listening from 10 am onwards.

I don’t think it’ll be banned anytime soon, some sort of regular testing may have to be undertaken and on going monitoring of cases at all clubs in the professional game, amateurs, well that is another matter.
