Shoplifters

At the checkout in B&M Durham when the lady looks up and shouts at someone, ‘where are you going with that?’ Turns out it was a shoplifter just walking out with an air fryer and that’s the 10th he’s had in a week from there. One of the staff ran after him but couldn’t do anything as they’ve been told not to by the police who aren’t interested either. They have said it’s not worth them bothering. The staff said I wasn’t allowed to challenge him either. Absolutely shocking.
How much do you want for it?😉

I went into Goulds Garden Center littlemoor Weymouth on Saturday. All the Jelly Cat soft toys are on the top shelves of the display racks. You have to ask the staff to get then down and take them to the till. The amount that are going missing is heading to three figures.

The staff were pretty adamant they would stop me if I went after him. I’m hindsight I could end up losing my job or being prosecuted if I had chased after him. It’s a ridiculous and sad state this country is in. The hands of good people are tied so this type run amok.
why would you be prosecuted???

My opinion is that it's not worth risking someone's life for an Air fryer or some beers and pizza so I totally get why they have a do not apprehend policy.

The major issue is that the police resources are not there to review cctv footage and arrest the shoplifters after the fact. That is probably down to the massive tory cuts to all public services. We can fix a lot of this by voting them out next year.

If you have nothing, you have nothing to risk

Easy to point the finger cosied up in front of the tv, lights on, hot water on tap, food in the fridge and freezer.

We all strive to make ends meet but some people can`t even make that

Desperation comes easy to some people and unless you`ve lived it, then we have no idea of the things we`ll do to survive.

Stealing an Air Fryer may keep someone from going hungry for a night, the cycle may start again tomorrow.

Look for the real criminals in todays society.

Clearly you have a point but we have to be careful here. There are millions in poverty and the vast majority don’t resort to thieving.
I run over a 100 shops and shoplifting is prevalent. It is predominantly men (although not always and usually aged between 15 and 30).
It is an odd assumption they are all so desperately in need so we should cut them some slack.

In the last 4 months I have had team members threatened with a hammer, a knife, spat at, pushed etc.
All that leaves a mark - not only on those who experience it. There are the others who hear about it.

In my experience (and, I would imagine the air fryer is a good example) most of the brazen ones steal …..to sell to fund…. a past time.
Their modus operandi is always high value items - they are not stealing spuds, veg and chicken.

I am sure a few (and it will be only a few) fit your narrative btw.

So eradicate shoplifting by voting the Tories out 🤣🤣🤣

Shoplifting has existed since the invention of shops and will always happen to some extent.

As we see in every single sector, including public services, everything the tories touch turns to absolute sh**, literal sh** in the case of the pollution to our waterways.

Voting to remove the tories is the best thing we can all do to improve our lives, including probably having the effect of increasing spending to increase police resource.

I'm looking forward to 'a lot of it being fixed' 👍
How long will it take ?

Exactly. This is Tory britain in a nutshell

I was a loss prevention manager in town in another life… 20 odd year ago now.

We used to catch them all the time and we got most…. Lots were regulars and the other loss prevention lads in the town used to shout up on the radio letting you know where they were

Most were ok and just feeding drug habits. They would just give up as soon as you got to them. We usually had a sandwich waiting for them back in the office

Only had two bad ones in 4 years… one pulled a knife on me, wasn’t a regular and turned out to be a prisoner on day release shopping for Christmas!

The other one was a regular. He decided to try and bite me but got a radio in the mush for his troubles

The silly sod even threatened my family as he was being carted off in the police van. Needless to say the next time he came out to lift he got given a good going over by a few of the other lads in one of the back offices with no cctv

Our policy was if you walked out the first set of doors you were getting picked up.

Would never get away with half the stuff we got up to when taking them out
I used to manage a shop 20 odd years ago. It must have been a different one to where you worked because our policy was to not employ thugs who teamed up with other lads.

I'm wondering if this trend is fuelled by what is happening in the states and posted on twitter where Gangs of lads walk in and loot the place en masse - That has nothing to do with poverty though - they are targeting smart phones/ trainers etc

In fairness it's been going on for years now. Once it became common knowledge police weren't interested word spread pretty quickly.
It is just brazen - no attempt to hide what they are doing and they just walk out.
Top of the pops - Booze, Steak and....... now they know there is another market, Baby Milk.

It’s not a case of the police not being bothered, more their numbers have been cut so far they just don’t have the resources to respond to small crimes
The coppers I know are always moaning about this, whilst voting for public service cut backs.

And if you beleive that then I've got some magic beans for you 🙄
To be honest, you never know, I was on a speeding course last year and a lad had got done for 42mph in a 40. I was done for 37 in a 30, slowing down fom a 60 limit into a village in Northamptonshire, caught by a van trap. Easy pickings.

If people stopped buying things off shoplifters, it would be a start towards discouraging them.

I've seen them taking orders from people in pubs for what they'll steal to sell next.

Used to work in a small supermarket nearly 20 years ago - we regulalrly used to stop/chase the shoplifters, was the best part of the day. We used to get regularly targeted as the layout of the shop meant it was easy to go up one aisle, get the booze/meat and walk out again without being seen.

We actually got advised " off the record" by one of Cleveland police's finest that if we ever got the chance to apprehend one of the scrotes, take him round the back of the shop and fill him in. Word would then get around in that community not to target the shop as it was more trouble than its worth!! One of the managers did (broke his hand in the process) worked a treat

Anyone can make an arrest if they see the person doing it, but employers are too worried about being sued if their staff member is injured.

Errr no - you have that wrong
I'm more worried about the health and wellbeing of those in my business and would not want them putting themselves at risk. They are all mums, dads, daughters and sons and the impacts on families and communities are horrible when they get injured.
