Shame in The Game - Racism in Football

Really interesting documentary on I Player.
Some heartbreaking accounts of abuse received by male and female players at all levels of the game.
The conclusion that racism isn’t really seen as a serious issue is easy to understand given some of the so called punishments given out.
The fact that only 1 Premier League club agreed to participate is also worthy of note.

In what sense though as surely no team in England would not a player on race. As look at the prem you be hard pressed to say it was biased to a specific race. Or is the issue coaching which I agree is an issue. Etc

Non white footballers just don’t believe they get the help they deserve in relation to abuse...

When you have a referee saying to a black footballer - ‘if you hadn’t celebrated the goal the way you did you wouldn’t have got the racist abuse’
When you have an official at a football match found guilty of racism and fined £75.....

I see a Porto player walked off the pitch at the weekend because of racial abuse.

Sad to hear as racism is a scourge of our society and it’s time it was eradicated from the game. Fines and bans need to match the seriousness of the issue as well

sadly I think in some European countries its seen as more of a cultural issue more than a legal one. Look at the black faces at the Spanish gp for example.

I stand by my post btw no elite club now would not buy a player based on skin tone. ( management is a dif issue) Yes it did happen in the past but not now certainly not in this country anyway

We had a race and extremism awareness night at Boro earlier in the season - supporters, club staff and players were all in the same room - we all watched video clips together of extremism/terrorism and racism. Some of it was deeply shocking to see/hear. But very powerful.
Afterwards there were questions, discussion, input from the players on their experience and then fans and club staff were invited to step forward and make some personal pledges towards tackling racism in life and/or football environment.

Sounds like a progressive thing to do.
No need mind - according to some on other threads, we don'e have a problem with racism:cool:

It was a pilot for going out nationally. There were national FSA officials and others there assessing it and all were impressed. It was hosted by an expert and government adviser on counter terrorism and extremism. From Middlesbrough.
