Seen the news last night & Pickfords outrageous tackle

Yes we were robbed too. Me and my son have gone through that highlight bit by bit and there is no way he was offside in that passage of play after the ball comes back off the defender. At least one Reading player has his boot in the dark green strip of turf, but no Boro player has.
It's one I wouldn't blame a linesman for though other than should you give the attacker or defender the benefit of doubt if it's marginal.

But he didn't punch him, did he?

If he did that would fall under the category of violent conduct and can be sent off after an offside.

The definition of violent conduct in the laws of the game is

"Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball"

If you accept the ball is in play, he should be sent off for serious foul play.

If it is offside, and the ball is out of play, how can he be challenging for it? The definition of violent conduct applies.

Surely you don't believe the ball was sufficiently out of play for it not to be serious foul play AND sufficiently in play for it not to be violent conduct?

I was always led to believe you favoured the attacker, but as you say who would you side with

You answered that yourself there, keeper ran out to block the shot..

Oh for the days when the ref consulted his linesman before awarding a goal or not. But we now have video technology, which I agree should be part of the game for those important decisions but simply applied. Cut out the extra officials other than the guy operating the replay. Just leave the decision to the on field referee, who after consulting his linesman any reason to award this or that. If there is doubt let him see a replay, then make a decision. Pickford should have been shown a red card, the officials blew it.

That's football sometimes stupid tackles happen, I've had a few against me and left my foot in a few times when getting bullied. Should have went off for there but over his career the CB will have given it out his fair share out
in the past.

Scrap it completely for me. Sadly, that won't happen so we'll have to put up with a higher level of incompetence for the foreseeable future until the lawmakers see sense.

Yes I agree it won't happen, s simplify the process for the ref and let the technology enable him to make a more informed decision. Not someone off the field.

Too many bent and big club refs, VAR is the way to go if you honesty and less corruption. The Champo refs have been unfit and bent for a long while.

"you will have how many people watch monitors to give him the nob to challenge something"

Seems a bit unnecessary. Let's leave nobs out of this.

Well, there’s a shock, Englands keeper Pickford in the clear, Van Dijk with an ACL operation and out for most of the season. The decision is no surprise I guess though!

Everyone in football recognises a mistake has been made by the ref and how VAR was used, it was a bad call. I don't believe Pickford should be punished retrospectively, but both he and Oliver need to look at themselves.
Pickford has history of poor decision making for me, coming out to make challenges for crosses and missing which I think is in his make up. It no surprise therefore when he makes such a bad challenge, wrong choice using his feet, clumsy. He is a great shot stopper, but that's it.
Gareth should be looking elsewhere for the wearer of Englands No1 shirt.

It's interesting that no-one has yet brought up the fact that VVD himself escaped two potentially bookable offences whilst on the pitch. I'm not suggesting Pickford's challenge in some way evens those out but had the ref made a decision to calm things down sooner then Pickford might have been less wound up (or whatever made him dive in).

The injury to VVD also shows another aspect of the VAR idiocy in so far as play going on after an offside may have occured. A serious injury occuring in the twilight zone between a move ending and the offside being given has been long overdue.
