Schools ban heading in football practices across uk (excluding wales)

Due to health reasons there does appear to be a growing moment towards reducing if not eliminating heading at lower age groups.

I saw an interview with Tony cascarino and cas thinks that all heading will be taken out of the game by 2040.

An interesting concept football without heading but can you really see this happening.

From bbc

“ Primary-age children have been banned from heading the ball in new guidelines issued by the football associations in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Heading restrictions for all age groups under 18 were also announced with a graduated use between 12 and 16.
The guidance, which will not yet apply in Wales, will affect training only.”

This was news three weeks ago?

I think it’s a good move. There is medical evidence to suggest that it has detrimental effects
Not sure about Cascarino’s comment though.

It’s on the Main news today maybe it was discussed before but the ruling has been passed today

I can see the reasoning behind banning heading the ball, but just a couple of things, the balls used are much lighter these days (just ask any keeper) and banning it in training and not in matches seems odd, as kids will continue to head the ball during a game but won't have been shown the best way to do it, which surely will increase the liklihood of sustaining an injury.

That’s my view as well as All the talk of Jeff astle etc, as poignant and emotive as it is, it doesn’t really have any relevance in the modern game as there is no comparison to the modern ball and the leather casey of his day.

Just get the ball down on the deck, it'll save lives and keep all the fans happy that don't like route one football. When we get Pulis back no one can complain anymore.:giggle:

Hopefully it'll help the kids keep the ball on the floor and play into feet rather than lumping it up the pitch.

Whilst I think it's a little silly tbh, perhaps it'll have a positive effect on ball control. Who knows?

Heading is a skill and part of the game it’s a far cry from the leather caseys of old let’s not forget those balls retained water as well so we’re akin to heading a medicine ball.
There really is no comparative today’s equipment.

This is true leather caseys full of water used to knack heading AND kicking

Modern light balls are so much better, we used to play keepie uppies with just headers (in the olden days when I used to play)

We dubbined match balls before we played, never used a dubbined ball after 1973. Had to be good at heading a ball I played up front.
