Sam Morsy

Do you see much chance of these homelands you speak of becoming more westernised in the next 20 years?
They are going the opposite way
Up to the 70s Iran Iraq Lebanon were very westernised
Then radical Islam took over these countries and they fell back about 300 years
I mean the ones which want to move forwards towards the West or are allowed to, not backwards, so places like UAE, Saudi, Qatar etc. I was at all of those ~20 years ago and have been to two in the last 5 years, and they're much further forward, especially in the main cities but they still have a long way to go.

Obviously Iran, Iraq and Lebanon haven't exactly wanted to integrate more with the West, but that's more down to who is running them and what they can/can't sell to the West, rather than what religion. But sure, a lot of their nutters clearly don't like Western ways, but a lot of their own people don't really like these nutters running them either.

Obviously UAE/ Saudi/ Qatar sell a lot of oil and gas and we're we supplying them with arms, tourists and using them as gateways to Asia etc. If they want to deal with the west they will become more westernised, as to deal with the West will mean they need more people from the West etc.

Same with Egypt too I suppose, where Morsy's dad is from, a lot of Muslims there of course and the tourist areas are very westernised and they obviously control the main sea route through there, so they make a lot of money from the West. They're still a pretty skint and less developed country compared to the others I mentioned though.

The Gulf states have no interest in becoming part of a Caliphate - they would quite like to maintain their hereditary monarchies. While hugely socially conservative, they don't put up with Islamists at all.

His religion is, and has been that way for 1500 years, and the areas the religion is practiced are decades behind us as a whole, development of standards wise and human rights etc. I'm not saying this is right
It isn’t. Religion regardless if it’s newly invented or a well established one, is no need excuse for bigotry. As already established most followers of most religions pick and choose what to follow. Being a member of our society doesn’t allow you to express extremist hateful views based on religion. You can believe them but you can’t express them and that’s the rules

No one is expecting him to denounce his religion, but he picks and chooses already. The best middle ground would have been to give the captaincy to someone else for the match. It’s not difficult, by staying as captain for that game he has made a statement

Absolutely. But I think it’s safe to say that Christianity is demonstrably more (ahem) enlightened than Islam. Will we ever see female/gay imams like we have clergy? Will men and women always be segregated for worship in Islam? To name but two examples.

That is not to say this is by design. The reason is largely (but not solely) owing to the fact that Christianity is dying and HAD to evolve. Islam is a much younger religion and is growing.

Another problem is that many on the left (not the true left, but what Maajid Nawaaz calls the ‘regressive left’) willfully conflate criticism of 1400-year-old doctrine with bigotry against Muslims as people.
It is further forward, but it's largely been more developed nations as a whole, that's more of the reason I think. But as we've been more developed we've probably had a head start with modern science etc, and that doesn't exactly play well with religion. I suppose it's because of science why I've zero belief in any sort of "god", or any acts which are basically physically impossible.

I'm no expert but I think an imam is similar to a priest? But, the UK only had it's first woman priest in 1994, that's only 30 years ago. It was only 20 years ago when Dubai's property boom really kicked off and the West moved in.

We're no saints though, it wasn't that long ago when women were not allowed in working mens clubs, or the golf club, snooker club or whatever, and loads would still be that way if they could get away with it, probably some still do unofficially.

We should be much further ahead than we are. People were still driving around hammered in the 80's and people openly being very vocal about people of different skin colour, and some still are in some circles, people just like to pretend it doesn't exist here anymore. It's still here, it's just brushed under the carpet or hidden away behind closed doors.

Christianity is dying as people are becoming better educated, and being a bit more realistic. But, as most of the white Christian nations have gone through massive development they're basically at the top of the rapid growth curve. That can't go on forever and now they've slowed down economically and the rich have taken over, it means life is crap for younger folk, so they have less kids so Christianity will dwindle due to these reasons too. There is only Africa which is really still booming population wise and Christian, but those folks will get the same flak from some white Christians as it's not really about religion, it's more about colour, the religion is just used as an excuse I think.

Yeah, it's fine to criticise the Qur'an or parts of it, and that doesn't necessarily need to be against Muslim people, but the fact they're Muslim or a different colour, which is what largely weaponizes it. There are many ways to criticise things though, and some ways work a lot better than others.

The numbers have long been fiarly clear on homosexuality:

As for Palestine, I speak to my Muslim friend every single week, the most delightful (in many ways liberal) lady, who nevertheless dared utter the calumny of the 7th Oct attacks 'not really happening' . I was shocked. There is a massive blindspot in the Islamic community re sexual difference and a humungous one re 'Jews'
She’d no longer be a friend of mine

I’m not assuming anything. I’m simply offering an opinion. You appear to be getting hot under the collar so…. I’m out!!
Yes it’s best not to discuss things that you are so wrong about
If you don’t understand the fundamentals then you can’t have a valid opinion
You can certainly have an opinion but it must be wrong based on a lack of knowledge

I don't think white "Christians" and Muslims have the same devotion though, I don't think there's equivalence there. So whilst there may be "picking and choosing" in both, one might be 10% where the other might be 90% for example, it's not the same etc.

He's not expressed hateful views, I don't even know if he is anti gay. He's probably been friends/ teamates with a gay lad at some point, but it doesn't mean he needs to wear a rainbow armband etc. The same way loads of white lads don't take the knee or whatever, it doesn't mean they're racists etc.

My point is we can't be dictating what others need to pick and chose, or to pick sides, especially in circumstances where there is an option to just stay quiet on a topic, like most do on controversial topics. How many on here who are very supportive to equal rights for all have actually went on any sort of march or demonstration or shown any kind of public support whatsoever? I bet the figure is low, most prefer to go under the radar.

Ipswich could have picked another captain when he didn't want to wear it, that's not Morsy's call. Equally any of the other players could have probably worn an arm band if they wanted. Although saying that, I bet they were probably not allowed as it was limited to captain only (which is stupid).
I don't think he has made a statement, he's made no statement, that's kind of the point.

I don't think white "Christians" and Muslims have the same devotion though
You e never lived in the American Midwest have you 😂

Nobody is dictating what he can pick and choose. It’s purely if he doesn’t want to stand with gays then he should do the right thing and the armband over for the game so someone else can. By refusing to do that he’s taken a stance.

What do people think of Guehi‘s additional message on his rainbow armband? “I love Jesus”

Quite clear undertones and a not so subtle protest. Worse than refusing to wear it in my opinion.

I’m sure Jesus is proud of him for making such a bold statement.

I’ve checked. Jesus thinks he’s a doyle.
That was the conclusion I came to as well, but out of respect for people easily offended by Rainbow colour armbands like Sam Morsy, I didn’t post it on religious grounds.

it is, because it's a proactive protest against equality.

would you take him over Morris?
No. I was being flippant because I said no and it was pointed out that he is captain of a team above us, as if that makes it a given he must be better than all our players and all other players in the championship.

He’s 33 and played one season on Premier League. The rest of his career has been League 2, League 1 and lower end of championship.

Ipswich have had one of those runs from League 1 to prem in two seasons. It happens. It doesn’t mean all their players are suddenly Prem quality.

Morsy is a poor, slow, combative midfielder and a walking yellow card.

I’m not sure why some of our fans rate him so highly considering he was a dud here.

Slow news day lads?

I could give you my lesbian daughters take on this but most would ignore it and carry on bickering over a man they know very little about.
