Salvage Hunters

Love it! Did you see the one a few weeks back at the big house near Scorton? Walked into one of the rooms and had a load of old Boro posters etc on the walls!

Love it, just discovered it so a lot of catch up.
I didn't like "Drew" much to start with but have warmed to him, certainly knows his stuff.
I was probably a bit jealous would love the lifestyle, arsing around the UK rummaging in sheds etc, buying stuff and turning tidy profit. Seems honest enough as well.

I've been working on it for a year now (on and off ... thanks covid). Really great show to make. The current series (15) is two shows in ... or 3 if you have Discovery +. The Northern Ireland episode that went out on the 10th was my debut. I was amazed how many people watch it .... wherever we go, Drew and Tee are recognised.

He is really straight up. He is on camera. He has to be.

It’s one of those mindless programmes, one that you can put on and half watch. If that makes sense.
Not mad keen on Drew. Sometimes comes across arrogant. Apparently he was putting it about a bit too. That’s why the blonde woman is now his partner in business only.

I've been watching it for years and bloody love it.

It's my dream job I think. Would absolutely love to do what he does and it looks like he's made a lot of money out of it over the years.

I like trawling through car boot sales, charity shops and these antique emporiums you get looking for quirky items. Personally, I'd much rather furnish and decorate my house with stuff like that, than somewhere like IKEA.

Sadly, I have little knowledge of that industry and wouldn't have a clue what I was doing from a money making point of view!

I also like Drew, he certainly has a wealth of knowledge and an eye for something different.

I like it but the numbers just don't add up... it seems he always makes a massive profit yet there's no mention of his running costs, wages, VAT etc

Its like those US Storage Wars programs. The TV company pays the stars and they overpay on the lockers, products etc. Same with Drew, without the TV money, he'd not be paying those prices with all the travelling and overheads.

He pays good money because he has clients who will pay top whack.... decorators etc. He will also buy well .... because of his knowledge. ie. a lamp in this coming wednesday's show (bought for 200, sells for well in excess of a grand). Then there are ceratin things that you think "How much?" ..... that then go on from him to a top London dealer with a mark up .... then on to an American dealer with an even bigger mark up. I've watched it happen. I've been around the trade for much of my life and I can tell you that Salvage Hunters is about as real as it gets with antiques programmes.

His turnover of stuff away from the cameras is massive. He's buying online constantly. Turns over many thousands in a day ... he has to. As you say, there's staff and overheads to pay. He earns way more from the antiques business than from the tv shows.

Let's not also forget that what you see on the show will only be a small fraction of what he actually buys from each dealer, and they obviously cannot film at every place he visits on these buying trips.

It's interesting hearing about what goes on away from the show.

He won’t even hold the items he makes his money from, he will buy online from his contacts and sell online to other contacts.
the used car game is the same , it’s having a constant supply that is the hardest task, but when you’ve been in that business for many years and are well known it’s easier to make money

On filming days now, we try to include every deal in the show. It's not always possible, but that's the aim (this is something of a new departure ... it's an evolving show).

Borolad, there's one thing I've never understood about him.

Occasionally he's somewhere and really likes something, but the owner wants just a bit too much even though Drew will say something to the camera like, 'I'd double my money on that'. I just think, you're there anyway, you'll make money on it, why not just buy it?

He's always on about paying for the fuel, paying Tee, hotel expenses etc. Surely you'd pay that bit more as it's all profit at the end of the day.

But what do I know. I'm guessing he needs to make a stance to show future dealers he won't be messed about and overpay?
