Ryan giles

Shouldnt play in games where we are aren’t expected to as competitive. Premier league teams and the better teams in this league. He’s proven to be a weak point and targeted by the better teams such as Burnley/Brighton. Leaked a bit on his side

He should play when we have at least half of the possession or expected to.

Worth thinking about.

Really disappointed to see him substituted today, one of a number of very odd change MC made. Giles is in our top three players for me this season and is a constant threat down the left. Hope we get him signed on a permanent deal.

The lads not a premier league left back,if he was he'd be playing for Wolves. Luckily we aren't in the premier league and he's a key player for us this season with the way Carrick has us set up.

But with him we "might" have scored 12 ?
You could go on all day with the "might"
Fact is, he is one of our best players simple! The aim of the game is to play your strongest squad, he's in that every match day!

He is worth having in the side for what he brings going forward, but it has to be a concern that the better sides are starting to target him and getting plenty of joy doing so

however good he is at crossing the ball, which is very, hes a terrible defender,i think anyone with eyes can see that,im sure carrick can see that, but hasnt had options as bola has been injured, time will tell.good cross for the goal yesterday

I’m sure the OP‘s suggestion will be something the manager is thinking about. He’ll be aware of the issues across our back line, and want to address them. Giles has defensive frailties, but he was so far up the pitch, yesterday, as Carrick clearly thought “go for it, no replay!”. I’m sure he can be coached to improve his actual defending, and can start a little deeper against the better teams. Smith can be coached to improve his awareness to check his shoulder more often. Centre half is a huge concern if Lenihan or Fry are missing. Clarke may be cover, McNair isn’t.

Defensively not great. Yet arguably one of the best attacking left wing backs in the champo.

You simply ain't going to find anyone who has both those qualities. If they did they would be playing in the Premier league. That or at a champo club demanding a 10-15mil transfer fee.

It's the way of the modern fullback. They go for mega money because of attacking ability. Not because they are good defenders.

That's from Spence to exactly the same argument you see daily about TAA. Do you take TAA out of the Liverpool side because he's a woeful defender? He probably loses a man or costs a goal most games. Yet adds so much more going forward.

Giles would be bombing up and down the left flank at wolves if he was the complete package. He's a more than capable champo LWB. We are a better side when he plays. Definitely a far better option than Bola.

The whole team got torn apart yesterday. That's by a very good side that plays big 6 teams off off the park. Definitely odd to single him out as the weak link. Just played a far better side. It's not the Brighton that we pipped to promotion.

Literally this. Defensively he's probably about average at the Championship level. Offensively he's Premier league quality and among the very best in the Championship.
Although, as Brighton shows, the quality in the Premier league is improving relentlessly and I suspect that Giles is on the verge of being left behind if he doesn't start playing regularly in the Premier league.

He's not a left winger or forward. Mowbray tried him in every position up front and only succeeded in making him worse.

Giles wasn't the only player exposed yesterday, Smith was getting run ragged, as were many others, Brighton are a top side, they can tear teams apart for fun, and we must realise the gap between the two leagues is massive.

Giles has been a great attacking left back for us, he has the best crossing ability in this league by far.

However his defensive qualities are lacking, and he is more exposed with better opposition we play against (hence why he isn't playing in the premier league) but he will help us in the championship against most teams.

I disagree with many posters wanting to sign him on a permanent deal now, best to keep him on loan and see where we end up, if we get promoted then we need a better option, he would be targeted by better opposition in the premiership, if we don't go up then maybe try and loan him again, he is a good championship player, but I do think that's his level.

His delivery is top end Premier League, defensively he is lower Championship at best.
It is a hell of a contrast.
If he wasn't this mix then he would be playing PL now.
I am really hopeful Carrick can fix the defensive frailty.

Against good attacking sides he is often found struggling. Absolutely see what he brings going forward.
Agree with previous comments. Play Bola in such games. And try Giles LM.

The thing is if Giles is to make the grade as a top class left back he needs to play to learn.
If not then he either plays further forward, or drops out.
Has he the pace to play left of a front three, or left in a midfield 4?
I really hope he nails the left back slot and can defend much better.

QFT.
He has said that he sees himself as a specialist wingback. The only way he can improve his defensive side is to play, coaching and for the team mates around him to cover.
You don't drop him for the "hard" matches.

I think Smith was ran ragged partly because of Forss playing ahead of him. Clearly Carrick underestimated the gulf in quality and thought we would have more of an opportunity to play our own game, which didn’t go too well to say the least. We probably should have concentrated on being hard to beat but fair play to him for wanting to stick to his guns.

I was amazed at Giles’s position when we were under pressure at right back here by the way. Hands on hips, no sense of danger whatsoever. Seconds later.. goal.

Never mind, on to the next one.

I'd probably try it the other way around. It's very reminiscent of when Joe Bennett broke through. He was good going forward but left acres behind him. The solution was putting Taylor in at LM to drop into LB and cover for him when needed.

I think Giles struggles in midfield, he's better coming from deep on the overlap. If you want to tighten that flank up for some matches then I think the solution is having a left sided midfielder who will drop in and cover for him. That's not McGree. Tav would've been perfect. Bola might work.

Was it Birmingham away when Bola came on? Pretty sure that's exactly where he slotted in, although can't remember whether Giles was still on the pitch at that point.
