Ryan Giles.....

Successful teams have good partnerships all over the pitch, I think we would see the best of Giles playing in front of an out and out left back.

In terms of delivery from wide areas,he's the best we've had in a long time and must be a pleasure for forwards to play with.

Have to agree regarding Downing who in his prime was a totally different level, really don't think he is given the credit for how good he actually was in his first spell.

If he could improve the defensive side of his game then there's definitely a player in there. The good news is he's only 22, so still plenty of time for him to develop and improve.

I don't know if he'd be effective playing as a winger, because he struggles to beat his man. Think the current set-up is ideal for him because he ends up with a lot of space out on the left, but as I said if he's going to continue playing LB he does need to improve the defensive side of his game.

Yeah that was my thought too. Downing was world class as a crosser, he had such a sweet left foot.
Giles is as good a crosser as downing was for me. His passing is excellent too.
He needs to work on his defending but he’s arguably akpoms most important player.

I'd be very surprised if we're not asking the question about signing him permanently. He's an assist machine.

Think he might be one of those who's almost too good for the championship but not good enough for the prem. Can get away with his defending a bit at this level and it's more than balanced out by what he offers going forward.

If we don't go up this year, I'd be pulling out all the stops to at least bring him back on loan again next year. Can't see him getting in the wolves side.

I dont think he needs to beat his man to be honest, just needs to get half a yard and whip in quality balls time and again

He would if he played as a winger. If you look at his assists they generally come when he's been fed the ball in acres of space with the opposition struggling to cover.
It's interesting our formation is weirdly lop sided but effective. On the right we have a traditional winger and full back and on the left we operate a wing back with the left sided midfielder tucked inside which creates the space for Giles to run into.
Like @parmoboy I'm not sure he'd be as effective as an out and out winger.

Nicky summerbee played wide midfield for Sunderland and was an assist machine for Quinn and Phillips,I could see Giles doing that for us,im a massive fan of Giles but yesterday he had acres of space against one of the worst teams in the league, the previous week at Turf Moor was a whole different ball game.
I don't see him as a full back although he has done well at times, his limitations defensively are a major concern and especially against better opposition.

Dunno if they get relegated and they off load a few players he would be perfect for them next season, hopefully they stay up

He is

He's far better coming forward than defending, that was obvious from the very start of the season, but he is actually so good with the balk that I think it far outweighs the defensive side of his game.

Of the two it's far easier to learn the defensive side of the game, very much like Ashley Cole for example, but he wouldn't be as effective in midfield so I expect to see him continue as a full back.

I genuinely can't think of a better crosser in my many years as a Boro fan. His delivery is top notch.

I mean I still dine out on Tommy Wright's two for Wiko against Leeds 😂
Never forgave Tommy Wright for scoring the winner at Leicester after Jamie Pollock’s stunning volley. Not that I harbour a grudge.
