Ryan Giles

Howson was excellent for me today, he just does the simple things, is always available, caused himself an i jury when fouling their player when Crooks was laying down in the WBA box

Agree regarding Giles, he can pass a ball on a sixpence

Akpom had a very good 1st half too, as good as anyone in the half, his cobtrol, movement was good, long may it continue

How laid back is Crooks, he seens to everything in slow motion

FairPlay to Dean Ashton now in ITV saying Jones is an excellent player in his own right and we’re not too fussed about selling Spence. It’s not often you hear that opinion outside of Boro fans

Jones does seem to hold back a bit now hopefully Hel go back to how he was soon enough . Please he scored today it will be good if he can start adding goals to his stats as well as assists

Giles does look like an assist machine. He played well today but I was disappointed we didn't look to get the ball to him a bit more. Every time he had it in the attacking third he looked threatening and you felt that something might happen but we didn't get him enough of the ball for me.

Mind you it'd help having more in the box for him to aim at. Wilder seemed particularly frustrated with Watmore today, screaming "just f@cking hold it" after he lost the ball for the umpteenth time.

Not often I dig Watmore out but he was absolutely shocking in everything he did today.

Can only think that this comes from the coaching team, we seem to recycle the ball more than just allowing Jones to run down the wing, in the hope of getting more players in and around the box and then try and work it back to him to put a ball in.

Listened to it on MFC digital , doing the last of a mini batch of nightshifts tonight so couldn't be bothered to go to the pub to watch it. They were raving about Giles saying how his placement was Beckhemesque. They pointed the finger at the lack of Tav like player for the equaliser where they reckon Mcgree didn't do what Tav would do and get his foot on it and break up the move.

I thought he was excellent going forward, his distribution is premier league quality but I think we are going to be more open as a consequence. Listening to the manager after the game he appears to accept that.

I think it was a combination of things, McGree wasn’t covering no where as near as much as Tav does in that position, as I suspected Tav was a huge miss. Bola was left alone at times but he struggled to cope with it too and resulted in Lenihan getting dragged over and left gaping holes. We need a left sided centre back and also a starter in Left centre mid for me. McGree is an impact player in my
opinion. Giles will be fine when we get the right players around him.

Was excellent in the main today.
Rubbish

Impressive going forward and delivered some quality balls into the box. Bit worrying how easily they were able to get in behind down the right side though in the 2nd half - but it's something which can be worked on going forward I'm sure.

I think we will really see the best of this lad when we have better options in the LCB and LCM positions (which hopefully will happen). We didn't really see any decent combination play between Bola, McGree and Giles. At one point in the 2nd half McGree played a ball down the line, assuming Giles was going to make the run and when he didn't McGree had a go at him.

Still early days to be fair so probably unfair to expect the 3 of them to instantly click but I'd still prefer upgrades in those two positions I'd mentioned.

I thought Giles was fantastic, brings the balance we lacked last season when teams knew if they stopped Jones we had little else.

Second half I thought we tired and they started to get in behind. Bola hasn’t had a full preseason and definitely tired, and Watmore and Akpom definitely fell away (again not surprising) which meant we weren’t holding the ball up.
First half we were great though, and with 4 or 5 players still to come in there is lots to get excited about.

Actually reminded me of Downing a bit (the younger Downing that is). Some similarities in dribbling style and his delivery is very Downing like.

His quality is obvious and will only get better as he gels with others.
