Russian takeover of Luhansk complete

I think one of the issues the West has, is we simply can't comprehend the losses that Russia are prepared to take to achieve objectives.

The West assumes Russia are losing, I'm pretty sure they will think they are winning.

They are both losing, Russia has lost alot of soldiers and massive amounts of equipment. More than they would of even considered possible in a worst case scenario, make no mistake this war has gone terribly for them. However they keep replenishing them, Ukraine can’t do that and it seems time and resources are catching up on them. Even if Russia walked away today Ukraine have still lost as well, they literally have no infrastructure left.

Russia are depleting their troops, their equipment and almost as important the foreign cash reserves and economic opportunities. This will have a massive hit on russia for decades after the fighting stops.

Obviously no winners are there? Massive, ridiculous act of self harm by Russia, hurting itself and it's neighbours for what? So a deluded, paranoid dictator can try and recreate his memory of a more glorious era (which certainly didn't exist the way he remembers it) while convincing himself that every other country is our to get him

Similar thought process to many of our leading brexiteers. But thankfully without the murder and war crimes.

Nationalism has a lot to answer for.

Where's the proof of these massive losses of Russian troops? Ukrainian reports? To be taken with a pinch of salt.

Many of the hardware losses have been independently validated using photo and satellite analysis, troop losses can only ever be an estimate. Russia can afford the losses at present but even if they take The Donbass they will have taken an area with no habitable cities, a population that is at best ambivalent towards them and an adversary willing to keep fighting. They have expended a high proportion of their guided/smart munitions which they cannot renew because of the componentry they use and are resorting to area bombardment to progress. The new Western supplied weapons are not yet fully on the battlefield but have already caused them to abandon Snake Island, we are training Ukrainian soldiers in the use of more sophisticated and long range artillery systems and air defence when those start to appear on the battlefield it could change things.

Hard to see a win in this for either side at this point but "not losing" is a victory for Ukraine.

This is probably the most authoritative place for open source verified Russian equipment losses, with a link to Ukraine losses as well.

I wouldn't touch the Ukraine Armed forces daily count of Russian losses and vice versa

As for Russian personnel losses its all about inference based off of a variety of sources with one of the most revealing being the recruitment schemes the Russians have going for replacing casualties, Wagner group being pulled from Africa, using Russian conscripts who arnt supposed to go to war instead of contracted soldiers as they cant contract enough, changing the conscripting ages for Ukrainian Russians from Donetsk and Luhansk. Then there's investigations in Russian garrison towns and simply counting the new graves vs the declared Russian losses. The only step left they really have is full mobilisation as apparently the latest conscript round fell well short of expectations with increased corruption to evade being called up. In short they are hemorrhaging men.

Plenty of open source stuff out there without using the Ukrainian state stuff.

They are literally raining down ordnance onto any location they want whether theres civilians in there or not and this is why the Ukranians withdrew.
Until the more sophisticated long range EU & GB supplied artillery gets used expect more and more ground to be made by the Russians.
It's really not looking good, they were never going to be able to slug it out from distance.

The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Donetsk People's Republic has reported that for the period from 1st January to 16th June they had lost 2,128 dead and 8,897 wounded.

I'm not sure the size of their force but wikipedia (Quoting The military balance 2021. Abingdon, Oxon: International Institute for Strategic Studies. 2021. ISBN 978-1032012278.) have the Donetsk + Luhansk militias at ~44,000 in 2021

If we assume the DPR and LPR militias are similar sizes and suffered similarly then they have lost about 10% killed and 38% wounded of their pre-war strength up to the 16th June. No doubt they have raised more troops since February but this at least gives an indication of the scale of casualties.

I suspect that the regular Russian forces have been used more carefully but the infantry element will have suffered disproportionately.
