Russia/Ukraine

Trump also said earlier this week, during an interview he doesn't want to abandon NATO. He said he wants everyone paying their fair share. Same rhetoric as his last term.
Exactly that, rhetoric.

That is his negotiating style.

He is entirely justified in wanting every member to meet their commitment.

Trump has no idea what pulling out of NATO would mean to the USA. Does he want all of his Forces back on USA Soil, I'm not too sure, or is it just NATO!. Their interests overseas would see their Units closing down and the likes of Mildenhall, Lakenheath and maybe Menwith Hill would need to be discussed. They would also loose their ears in Europe, the middle and possibly the far East as even non NATO Countries would question their existence on their land.

It won’t happen.

He has been quoted probably thousands of times since 2017.

Here’s just one.

“Donald Trump said to Ursula, ’You need to understand that if Europe is under attack we will never come to help you and to support you,” Breton alleged Trump said at a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“By the way, NATO is dead, and we will leave, we will quit NATO,” Trump also said, according to Breton.
You must be laughing at Trump there then. Because that's a documented quote.

Surely it can't happen.
It can happen. Like many things that we thought we'd never see. The fall of the Berlin Wall, Cuba, Suez...

Even if the US doesn't leave NATO during this term, Trump will only reduce the US' financial contribution to NATO and will not involve himself in spending US dollars on overseas matters.

America First, remember?

Do you really not understand the concept of making rhetorical threats to achieve a desired outcome?
Personal criticism now? Nice.

You're treating what is being reported like a menu, selecting which bits you choose to believe and presenting them as established fact.

Americans are always cautious about the threats to their country and without vital overseas int from former allies that they will not be privy to, their home defence will be limited. . Bear in mind this will also cover BMEWS, Cyprus, Ascension Island Turkey, Italy etc etc which they will have no right to be on that land due to his belief in 'America first', which may come last.

Anyway. I have work to do, so crack on.

I know I can't predict the future, or know which of Trump's statements are rhetoric or lies - how can anyone? I do know he's consistently said he want sto spend less on overseas matters and focus on America's internal problems and I believe (my opinion) he means to do exactly that.

The solid ground of certainty is the domain of the young, foolish and ill-informed.

“Who will guarantee Ukraine’s security?

Trump? No chance.”

The solid ground of certainty you say…….?

Trump has it made it very clear he is unwilling to continue to fund their commitment to NATO at the current level. He is reducing their contribution and reallocating that money to internal needs.

The US are not going to be there to prop Ukraine up.
This once again demonstrates Trump's (and maybe some other people's) misunderstanding of how NATO funding works.

There is no overall, centralised NATO military equipment budget that the US and others contribute to. There is a small centralised budget that funds things like NATO headquarters and infrastructure, but it's relatively tiny compared to the various countries' overall military expenditures - it equates to only 0.3% of total allied defence spending. And the US is not even the single biggest contributor to that, they contribute exactly the same percentage of the total as Germany (15.8813%).

The money that is often talked about - the target of 2% of GDP that NATO members have committed to, is the money that countries allocate to their own national military budgets.

Funding NATO

The US national military budget is bigger than anyone else's because that's what they choose to spend, totally by themselves, for their worldwide military requirements.

Yes, some of that budget can theoretically be used to provide personnel and equipment to any joint NATO operation that might occur, but that's not it's primary purpose.

So this idea of Trump's, that he can "take" money from some supposedly massive NATO budget that the US has and re-allocate it elsewhere is just completely wrong-headed - as is a lot of Trump's thinking.

Now you're picking bits out of my earlier posts, like from a menu, and reassembling them out of context to prove some sort of point.

I notice you omitted where I said "I know I can't predict the future, or know which of Trump's statements are rhetoric or lies"

You seem to be some of an apologist, or appeaser, for Putin. I hope you're enjoying yourself. Innocent people are dying.

No, not at all.
