Russia/Ukraine

Feels like we’ve entered a new chapter in the conflict with this Ukrainian occupation of Russian territory and continued push further in. I can’t tell from the reporting if we’re just waiting for a massive response from Putin which could be much worse than we’ve seen or if he’s genuinely on the back foot. Rifkind was on the radio saying he expects something bad is coming from Russia and the Ukrainians probably can’t hold the ground for long. I guess Modi being in Kiev means it’s less likely Russia willl attack there after the massive drone attack on Moscow but maybe once he’s gone all bets are off.

Also reading that Ukrainian forces are openly saying they want a peace settlement asap suggesting they’d compromise on previous red lines. Not sure where that would leave the international community and Russias relationship?

I said it would be a long conflict and its now over 2.5 years - neither side seems interested in talking, certainly negotiating. Putin seems to want a war to help him keep power in Russia. Ukraine seems to want to join the EU and NATO and fully retain Crimea and all of the Donbass.

I can't see a military victory to either side and neither economy is collapsing. It starting to remind me of Orwell's 1984 when the big powers were constantly at low level war.

We’ve been waiting for Putin’s ‘massive response’ for most of the last 2 years and it hasn’t come. I think he’s all bluster.

He isn’t going to use nukes. He isn’t going to bomb his own country to get the Ukrainians out. Has he even got the firepower to level large parts of Ukraine?

I think it’s just a case of this grinding on until Putin realises it’s hopeless and then there will be some kind of peace where both sides can argue they have won.

I see on a daily basis the toll the war is taking on Ukraine. It needs to stop, it really does.

Putin will be holding on for the US election. If Trump wins that, I’d expect that’s the end of the bankrolling and effectively then hands inevitable victory to Russia, based on a peace settlement which includes Russia keeping large parts of Eastern Ukraine.

Unfortunately the west have been to slow and scared to respond due to all of Putins rhetoric. I think from the early days when they failed and Ukraine had the fleeing on the back foot is when it became fairly obvious the great Russian war machine was all just talk and Bravado.

The fact we are still drip feeding weapons, causing shortages and rationing, and not letting the weapons they do have be used to full capabilities then we are letting Russias war of attrition play out with many small gains and advances.

All this convinces Putin the support will dwindle and he can co time his match across Ukraine as the west given in.

Putin only knows a show of strength and that’s what we should have done not pussy foot about like we have.

Once we have given the weapons to Ukraine they are Ukrainian , just the same as are his Iranian and North Korean weapons.

For all your plucky UKR vs fascist scumbag Z snippets, musings and gossipy needs right here in this exciting thread

My guess is the Russians are being made to react, and send troops from the Ukrainian land they currently have occupied to the region Ukraine have invaded. It seems to Ukraine want implement attrition. They know it could go on for years yet. Will Putin last that long?

They still seem to be advancing in The Donbas - so don’t seem to be moving troops from there - but maybe Zaphoriza (sp.?) and Kherson?

Shouldn't this be kept on the thread called 'The end' to avoid splinter groups. It really provides what may prove a truly historical thread in time, post special military operation that is?
