Rugby League WC 2021

I normally go to all the big international events in the region euro 96, the Olympic football eng at the riverside and at st James etc but this is a bit underwhelming isn’t it.

I’ll admit I’m not a rugby league fan but it strikes me as a pretty low tier game.

Thing is about RL, there are only really 3 really competitive nations and we weren't likely to get any of them.

Still, Samoa aren't bad, ranked 7th I think, above all the Celtic nations and France.

Rugby League is a non-event at international level.

I'd maybe go to the Riverside to watch England play it, but I can't say I'd care that much about the result.

Rugby by itself isn't really popular enough to justify two codes, in my eyes.

I was involved in the bid process in a small way and Rugby League World Cup organisers made very encouraging noises towards Tees possibly getting New Zealand or Australia. Not sure quite what has happened to be honest. We might find out the thinking one day perhaps.

I love the fact that you could fit the entire population of the Cook Islands into the Riverside, plus about a sixth of Tonga.
