Roy Hodgson returns to Crystal Palace

He has a kind run of fixtures so if he doesn't keep them up then he will have 2 relegations on his legacy in his last 2 jobs. His effort at Watford was quite bizarre as he always disconcertingly talked about "them" rather than "us".

It does seem a strange one. I think I would of just backed Vieira to turn it around if it was me and if still not happy then make a change in the summer

I think the lack of a win in the last 10 games can easily justify a sacking. Certainly they are in freefall.

Scratch the surface and it looks like they have taken wins from most of the games against teams below them which is why they are where they are. I think the run a fixtures has been tough, and as a neutral I think I would want him to play the easier games and see if the early season form turns around.

As a business owner/ chairman I think I may be more ruthless though. New manager bounce, playing a few other teams that are in the mixer for relegation. A couple of wins and you're secure.

it just highlights the lack of any long term planning. i can imagine he keeps them up but where do they go in the summer to avoid being in this situation the next few seasons. it can only work so many times

When you look at the turnaround and turnover at Middlesbrough over the past two years, it's alarming that they're bringing him back because he knows how everything was a couple of years ago at Palace.

They're essentially saying that the club has been stagnant since Hodgson first left if he's expected to just slot back in.

I think it had more to do with palaces form than the colour of his skin

I am aware.

But it's not a great look, especially when there's constant complaints about the lack of black managers in English football.

Roy Hodgson was let go because they felt he'd taken them as far as he could, and he's ancient.
He then did an atrocious job at Watford.

Viera had a good season with Palace last year, and was doing fine up till the end of December, then hit a sticky patch this year during a tough run of fixtures against European chasing sides and was sacked.

I'd maybe understand sacking him if they had a proper replacement lined up, but it's a sticking plaster instead.

I agree it’s not a great appointment

Whats Vieira's age and skin colour, and Roys, got to do with anything.

He knows the club, they've got a run in which the board/fans/media all believe consists of alot of games they should be winning and they feel he can get them through it with enough points to stay up, then they'll look for a new manager. He understands the job and if they stay up it'll look a shrewd decision.

Like many other clubs in thr PL expectations are higher than reality, I remember when Charlton were mid table in the PL,things start to go wrong, fans expectations increase,Manager sacked and they go into free fall.
If we go up I'm hoping we can all be a little patient and accept we aren't a top 10 club at this stage, survival would have to be the aim.

There was a topic a few days ago on what would be the next steps to success if we got promoted and I was shouted down a bit when I suggested there is no way we can be successful in the PL. That was because my definition of success (challenging/winning at the top of the league) was different to other people's. I think this shows exactly what I mean though. The type of success we are capable of is survival and that means getting rid of young, ambitious, progressive managers and replacing them with dinosaur survival experts at times. The gulf in finances between the divisions means not getting relegated is the ultimate aim. If Palace survive, and I expect they will, then they will most likely hire another young, ambitious, progressive manager but the nature of the PL means that even if they do really well for a year or two they will find themselves in this situation again. This is what success is for teams outside the super clubs at the top end of the league.

Success relies on scouting, Leicester got it spot on. Get the recruitment right and you can achieve anything but if it was that easy then anyone would do it. We need to trust our recruitment team and processes.
