Unexpected isn't the word for it
He must be about 40 yrs old now isn't he?
There was an ex Boro player used to run/own the Clynes Rd newsagents near where I used to live as a kid. Think his name was Ray Yoeman(I could be wrong I was quite young when he had it)Many top flight players can retire for life at 35. Luxury house fully bought by then. £50k a year pension from 35 to death. They can get a pension at any age with full tax advantages I believe there is a special arrangement with HMRC for them.
Many Premiership/Championship players don't have to play until 40 in non league/lower league football any longer.
We were discussing David Mills on here earlier in the week - he went from most expensive English footballer ever to Whitby Town footballer in 7 years and print salesman. (1979-1986) I could not see it happening now. I also remember seeing Ian Gibson RIP playing for Whitby in 1976. He played for the Boro in the early 1960s and mid 1960s then sold to top flight Coventry City where he played for a good while and I think he even played for Scotland. By 1976 I think he was a Redcar fisherman.
