Rooney

I Like the way DCFC has been renamed Rooney's Rams or Rooney's Derby in the press now, much like for a while it was named Lampard's Derby.

Derby's implosion mirrors Sunderland in my opinion. A chain of expensive managers assembling unbalanced and expensive squads - ultimate short-termism.

I couldn't believe their side last night when I checked the teamsheet - mainly kids and lower league players, clearing paying the price for their previous excessive spending and at present they're just not good enough.

Who ever wanted waghorn For the boro gain as he’s as useless as he always has been.

Never rated him was shocked we were even linked with him.

Seems to have this big name reputation despite being incredibly average.

TBF he was decent for Ipswich. But yeah he's worth buttons now.

I’m enjoying the show Derby are putting on at the minute. I bet Steve Gibson is too.

As for Rooney, I’ve got a couple of mates who are “big Man U fans”. They used to bang on about how good he is. I’ve always thought he was a top player in patches and bang average the rest of the time. Right now he looks like he’s on the cruise to retirement and picking up as much money as possible on route.

Not sure that's entirely true. Plenty of strikers have had long careers and proven to be top quality into their 30s. Depends on luck with injuries (that's what did for Owen really) how well you look after yourself (not sure Rooney was the best at that) and maybe the type of striker you are.

Look at Lewandowski. Probably just had the best season of his career at 31. Vardy arguably the same at 33. Defoe, Phillips both excellent well into their 30s.

To be fair Wazza is 35 now anyway. Most outfield players have retired by his age. He probably should.
Rooney was playing every week in the prem at 16, owen wasn’t much older, they only have so many years playing at the very top, that’s what I’m getting at. Vardy was playing for the dog and gun at 21

Ibrahimovic, Suarez, Ronaldo, Romario? Did they all play for pub teams at 21 too?

It might well be true in some cases, and maybe that is why Owen started picking up injuries and Rooney started to fade as he got to 30, but I don't think it's universally true by any stretch and I'm not sure it's more true of strikers than wingers or midfielders.

Owen’s injuries were down to genetic issues with his leg muscles according to quotes I’ve read from him. There is an element of burnout from playing too much, too young but if you stay relatively injury free, you can extend your career well into your 30’s or even 40’s by looking after yourself physically.

James Milner is a few months younger than Rooney and made his debut at the same age in the same season, so he’s probably the best comparison you could make with Rooney. They’re literally leagues apart in terms of the levels they’re capable of now.
