Ronaldo has scored 787 goals, amazing

Weren't some of Pele's 1000 goals counted from friendlies and exhibition matches?!

This record of Ronaldo's is genuine and its incredible, he's transformed himself from one of the best wide attacking players in the world to one of the best number 9's in the world the guy is an absolute machine and he isn't finished yet.

As for the Messi comparison I would always go with the little Argentine. I've watched lots of both of them on the telly and been lucky enough to watch them both in the flesh a good few times.

One of Messi's performances i watched were absolutely incredible, he literally ran the game and was on a completely different level to anyone else on the pitch. People in the stands at the Nou Camp were literally laughing at one point because it was just a joke how good he was.

Ronaldo might be the better goalscorer and will likely finish his career with a better record than Messi but for pure talent there's no comparison. He's probably the best playmaker to ever play the game (apart from maybe a couple of seasons of Maradona's peak) and he's also going toe to toe with one of the best goalscorers of all time in the process.

I've watched some great players in the flesh, Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Figo, Xavi, Iniesta and all the great English and Premier league players of the last 30 years and no one came close to Messi, not even close. He was just playing on a different level.

It is of course all about opinions but I'm firmly in the Messi camp and really struggle to see how anyone can put Ronaldo above him.

The arguments for Ronaldo all seem based on stats and "he's done it in different leagues". Apart from the fact Messi's stats are comparable, and in many cases better anyway, I've yet to hear a convincing argument about why Ronaldo's game makes him better. What does he do better than Messi that puts him above him?

The answer is very little, other than things that are to do with physical prowess. Things that involve technical ability or skill with the ball, Messi is superior in every area. Dribbling, finishing, touch, passing, free kicks. Even tactical awareness.

That's not to say Ronaldo doesn't excel in those areas, of course he does. But he's still behind Messi in every one.

Ronaldo is more powerful, better in the air and probably quicker over distance. He's an incredible athlete and an exceptional footballer.

But Messi is just an incredible footballer full stop. Ronaldo runs him fairly close as an overall player because of his physical attributes. In terms of pure skill and ability though, it's not close at all.

This. Agree 100%. To do it twice in the Prem and also across the 3 main football leagues in the world consistently makes him stand out.
Messi was always surrounded by the best...... we'll never know.

When wasn’t Ronaldo surrounded by the best?

So was Ronaldo.
Neither have ever played for a team that wasn't already at the top.

When he signed for Man United, they'd won 8 of the last 10 league titles.
When he signed for Real Madrid, they'd won 4 league titles and 3 Champions Leagues in the last 10 years.
When he signed for Juventus they'd won the last 7 titles in a row and would probably have won more if they hadn't been expelled from the top flight in the mid 2000s.

By comparison, Real Madrid were the "struggling side" domestically, but that's clearly a daft statement.

He certainly wasn't surrounded by the best when he single handedly won the Copa America for Argentina this summer.

Sure anyone who watches Barcelona will tell you he really hasnt been surrounded by the best for at least 5 years now, yet has still performed to an incredible level. Watch out for Barcelona's results this year, it will tell you how good he actually is. They have been miles off a team capable of winning something for a good while now

This just reiterates why I think Messi is the greatest of all time.

He's a playmaker and a goal scorer at the same time.

He's the bookies clear favourite to go on and win yet another Ballon D'or after what he did for Argentina this summer.

I didn’t even think he was Argentina’s best player in Copa America.

Same as when he won the golden ball at the 2014 World Cup, he looked half embarrassed to collect it. There’s no way he should have won it. That decision was based on marketing.

Erm...
He won player of the tournament, scored the most goals, provided the most assists and captained the side that lifted the trophy.

Being top scorer in a side doesn’t automatically make you the best performer

As for winning player of the tournament, refer back to what I said about the 2014 World Cup.

But you clearly didn't watch the Copa America if you didn't think Messi literally ran the show.

He rightly so won MVP. He was incredible throughout.

I didn't say it did, but Argentina scored 11 goals at the tournament and he was involved in 9 of them.

He was far and away their best player and the best player at the tournament.
He was man of the match in 4 of their their 7 matches.

I did watch it

I think he’s probably the best player of all time

I didn’t think he was clearly their standout player in the tournament, just as I think he was wrongly gifted the golden ball in 2014

My opinion.,

I'm interested to know who you thought was better than him throughout the tournament this summer.
