Ronaldo a genius..... apparently 🙄

and I wonder why I had started to fall out of love for football. Cheating is acceptable, why even bother with VAR, if it only to be used for a shoe lace offside!

Bale did the same btw.
Not quite the defender still came through the back of him, he knew they would so positioned himself accordingly but it was still a foul, Ronaldos wasn’t or at least shouldn’t of been.

True not exactly the same but He def went out to “win” the pen ad he turns into the player

There is nothing in football I hate more than diving. The fact FIFA themselves are claiming that it was clever to win the free kick just sums up my feelings about the game. Contact isn't a foul, causing the contact yourself certainly isn't a foul. If you put people that have played the game and cheated themselves in charge then it's only going to lead to them condoning cheating.

I really hate football at times.

My one hope for VAR, which I otherwise think is complete waste of time, is that it would put this rubbish to bed once and for all. Instead it's actively aiding and abetting the divers. You know when the ref goes to the screen that the slightest contact will be given as a penalty EVERY time.😡

All VAR has done is highlight that it wasn't really the "speed of the game" or whatever after all. It's that most refs are completely inept when it comes to understanding what they're looking at, probably because very few actually play or have played the game at any level.

On the praise for Ronaldo, where do you even start? It shouldn't be a thing getting praise for winning a penalty. A penalty should only be awarded because a defender has made a mistake. It's a "penalty" i.e. a punishment. It's not a "reward" for being clever or cunning or whatever bollox they come out with.

By all means praise the run or the dribble etc that led to the mistake, but players shouldn't be praised for intentionally trying to win a penalty as opposed to, you know, try and play the game as it's intended.

The fact it's FIFA saying it says it all. Game is fooked. No-one wonder I only care about Boro these days. If it wasn't for that I'd barely watch the "sport".

An inch offside IS offside, that's a great use of technology because it isn't based on interpretation, it's a statement of fact. Where VAR has struggled is in how it is used to challenge penalties. Again it works well with the in or out of box decisions. But the was it wasn't it a penalty is a problem of interpretation. I would like to see something like the Tennis system where managers can challenge the decision so many times in a match, I would like in such cases for the decision to go to 3 ex-refs to look at and decide with a majority vote :D

In fairness it’s a comment by Sunny Oliseh, who is on the FIFA payroll, but it’s not like an official statement they’ve released is it?

Bit if a misleading headline in a way.

Not really it was an official briefing by the FIFA technical study group, as such the bloke represents FIFA.

I wonder if the author is a Man U.........erm.
Or Portuguese hoping for the same in the next match! A good reason not to comment on these things mid tournament. If they'd implied he dived and he gets booked next match for it there would be complaints similar to the use of a video featuring England to highlight shirt pulling in the box to referees. I just hope this doesn't encourage cheating.

One of our 'expert summarisers' objected to a player being penalised for pulling the opponent's shirt the other day. He's obviously cheated his way through his career claiming it was done through 'instinct'. Sorry but that's not true.

Ex-players and ex-refs are still rubbish. Peter Walton is the expert and he is wrong every time. The ex-players never know the rules.

It needs new, better refs and a clear directive to remove cheating from the game. It would be so easy if they just punished cheating instead of rewarding it.
