Robert Jenrick clearly on message

I love our flag. It's one of the best looking flags in the world. I have no issues with politicians standing in front of it and find this more appealing than having politicians who are embarrassed by it.
Even Sheldon found it an attractive flag when hosting fun with flags.

I have no personal issue with the flag. But, and this is the nub, right wing parties throughout history have used flags and other nationalistic tropes as some kind of measure of their 'patriotisim' without actually following through to make the country better for those people. It's a meaningless gesture for political figures to stand in front of a flag when they are taking more from the citizens than they give.

The way this usually plays out is they start to claim those who do not share their stance standing in front of a flag are not patriots, when the reality is they're generally not nationalistic, which is very different.

Churchill has become the dogwhiste for this attitude, with nationalists claiming you are not 'patriotic' unless you bow to the cult of Churchill as a perfect person when clearly he was far far from that.

...can I also just add, that what is far more important as a gesture of patriotism is meeting the core cultural & moral values of Britishness. There is a perception that fairness, honesty and integrity is the essence of Britishness, so seeing a Tory on TV lying and defending this cronyistic and corrupt government and it's dismantling of free speech is literally as unpatriotic as a British person can be.

You must be able to see it's being used as a cheap political tool at the moment though? This government hasn't had an obsession with flags for the past ten years. All of a sudden, when blind faith and nationalism can over rule reasonable political debate. They are using it to distract from their corruption and incompetence. Knowing there are enough people who'll fall for cheap pantomiming and false decrees of nationalism and be impressed by it

All we need to understand is their motivation for putting the flag up alongside a picture of the queen.
It is purely to get people to like them and vote for them.
Certain people will base their voting decision on just that.

The politicians aren’t always stupid.

Oh no, they are far from stupid in this case. They no exactly what they are doing. Even from some of the responses in this thread we can see that it works

That flag is being cynically used to blind a lot of people to the sheer lack of talent and incompetence currently sitting round the cabinet table. The inference is if you criticise chancers like Buckland, Williamson, Patel, Raab, Fox, Matt Vickers, Simon Clarke et al then you are somehow criticising the country. Its there to make people think twice about asking difficult questions ("do I really need the hassle from the faux-patriots today?") and its an easy way to keep the flag-shaggers distracted and foaming at the mouth at the 'lefties' 'wokes' 'media scum'.

It's Brexit nationalism and the bullying tactics that got us to this point being rammed down the throats of at least 48% of the population, and its going to go on until the next election so steel yourself for the long haul - because its going to get more suffocating before it gets better. It worked for Trump and his cronies during his four years in office - all sorts of crimes and despicable behaviour hidden behind the stars and stripes.

By the way it can't have escaped notice that Naga is the one being targeted (for basically laughing) by the usual suspects while Charlie Stayt is not even mentioned.

Just a quick google search shows Keir Starmer sat in many places with the union flag behind him . The same as many EU leaders are sat with their national flag behind them.
My post said only that I loved the flag and did not mind a politician sitting in front of it.
. It is very appealing. As usual you post after me and try to politicise what I was saying. As I have pointed out before your anger over the Brexit vote and the result of the general election are becoming more and more boring to me. So after coming on this board in its various guises for over 20 yrs you are only the second person who's posts I will ignore Happily on this occassion I only have to press a button.
Bye.

Very appealing it may be to you, but that has nothing to do with anything. They aren't doing this for the aesthetic pleasure, they are doing it to characterise themselves as 'patriotic' to appeal to that kind of voter. The recent proliferation amongst government is no coincidence, it's a targeted campaign.

I know and find it odd that people feel the need to point it out to me. I am educated to degree level .I have had a very successful career and I am happily retired. People like ST post like they need to educate me and others when I am perfectly aware of what is happening. When I say the flag is appealing to me that's exactly what I mean. The colours and the way other flags are combined to make the union flag are appealing visually to me. No other reason , no political leaning just I like the look of the flag.

Anyone see the questioning of James wild mp on the annual report of the bbc

may have been wrong about the flag. Tories seem to be using it to get the left and right to fight to put things under the radar
