Robbo on our 3pts article today

Yes i agree, although our form for the2nd half of that season was largely poor, infact we had a very long run without winning a game. And Barmby wasn't there in '96/97 after a few games. It's common that newly promoted teams have a flying start but we obviously didn't have the quality to maintain it.
As you say promoted teams usually get sussed out by the big boys in the second half of the season. Its always the hardest part. Plus as the season goes on you get injuries and suspensions to contend with. A glorious failure. Loved that season.

What ***ed me of is that Mikkel Beck kinda watched the ball bobble about on the Leeds goal line without throwing himself at it, the 3pts would have been forgotten about if he knocked it in.

I don't think we were sussed out at all. I mean when you add juninho we would be playing completely differently anyway. I think our form dipped because of the inclusion of juninho.

When he came back for the second and third time's he was half the player he was previously. I always put this down to the injuries, but I do wonder if his talent was coached out of him from coaches wanting a more risk averse player.

He was a high risk player. Running through the middle of the pitch. You just don't see that in football very much, the dribblers tend to be on the wings. We didn't accommodate him into the team well. We were poorer defensively, and it broke up the forward line who were playing so well.

Then next season rather than buying in some quality SOLID players like he would 2 seasons hence he brought in a dicky dancer like Emerson.

I also think Cox, Fleming, Walsh, Vickers Pearson were all capable premier league standard defenders and it was the shape and balance of the team that negatively affected results, rather than the standard of player.

It hurts obviously but what hurt me more was only getting 1 point from our home games against Forest, Southampton and the mackems.
We didn't beat any of those sides home or away that season, our performances between October and Christmas were abysmal including a mauling at Anfield......still hurts though that our great run in February and March counted for nothing and cup success saw us having to play 4 games in 8 days at the end of the season.....Klopp etc,,,would explode!

THREE POINTS!

I do wonder whether the 3 points business galvanised the club and contributed to the improved results.
If we had sent 'kids' to Ewood Park in December and got beaten, would the poor form have continued and lead to relegation anyway?
Or were the improved results purely a result of signing Festa & Schwarzer?

Viv and Robbo were carrying knocks, so Ben Roberts at right centre half, with a half each for Viv and Robbo......Blackburn 0 Boro 1 (Hignett pen, 85)

Robbo needs to RELEASE THE BLACKBURN STARTING ELEVEN!! Let the people know who would have started!!

Three point deduction but had we played the kids, we would have lost. When we did play Blackburn we got a point so was it really a two point deduction?

what really was scandalous was the late penalty that we weren’t given at Ewood. I think it was Hendry who cleaned Juninho out and nowhere near the ball.

We drew the rearranged game with Blackburn whereas we would have probably lost with a weakened team. We would have finished joint 3rd bottom not sure if we would have stayed up on goal difference?
Ok not this again playing Blackburn made no difference as it was the points we already had won that were taken off us.

As losing Blackburn didn’t equal losing three points so the score at the Blackburn game was irrelevant.
We effectively had one game taken off is a game that we the fans had paid this was erased from the record books, this though is never mentioned

so in effect we were punished twice.

Which game was it, I was sure I saw every home game that season so it must have been an away game?

Have Derby fans paid for games that they are yet to play but won't exist, despite them attending?

If you watch the highlights of the 95/96 and the 96/97 season (one of the benefits of lockdown) some of the goals we conceded were laughable (take the liverpool 3-3 as an example, we concede 1 goal by falling over the ball!!) Our defence and goalkeeping situation was nowhere near strong enough until the Festa/Schwarzer signings. Also the depth of our squad was terrible. Many players that played over those seasons never played top division football regularly for any club.

I have always wondered if when we did sign juninho if we had signed 4 or 5 grizzled top division stalwarts instead would we have had a more solid base to add the superstars later (I'm not advocating this, it's TLF, our greatest ever)

Looks like Robbo had the same thought for 98/99:

Dean Gordon
Gary Pallister
Paul Gascoigne
Brian Deane
Andy Townsend
Neil Maddison
Colin Cooper

9th Place finish.

Sorry Zorro, I don't get this logic.
If we had turned up at Blackburn and lost we would have finished the season with 41 points.
