Roadmap may be affected - Indian variant

Boris saying this week restrictions could still remain and SAGE are concerned about the exponential rises in the North West, and Glasgow of the Indian variant. I hope people don’t think this pandemic is over and drop their guard with social distancing etc could quite easily see another wave before the end of this year. Thoughts?

Read an article with a guy with a chain of Indian restaurants who said that when they closed they packed all their chefs off home to India. Was worried about getting them back due travel restrictions and possibilities of them bringing the variant with them

Also reading Prof Pagel’s (long explanation) on Twitter does provide some context behind the frankly terrifying headlines the prats who write them force down our necks. Personally I found the Independent’s the worst.

She is basically suggesting a bit of a delay to the next stage of the roadmap, which if the weather improves I think would be stomachable. I mean if it’s sunny you wanna be outdoors anyway right?

The worst thing will be if they start dicking about with regionalised rules again, which simply don’t work and just cause division, rebellion and confusion.

I fully understand some people’s nervousness about the future, but it’s worth noting that the headline could also be written as:

“Roadmap may NOT be affected - Indian variant”

Would people rather:

take a chance that the vaccine works on the variant and continue with the current roadmap

or

delay slightly the easing of restrictions to ensure cases were not turning into hospitalisations

I would say that suggests it is more likely to be affected but perhaps won't be. The thread headline is far more positive.

I would rather they'd have put India on the red list when they were having their enormous spike. Pakistan and Bangladesh were on it.

yeah the june date is totally getting extended isn't it. just a small leak into the press yesterday about tiered systems and variants again. they have played it like this all the way through. the january lockdown was inevitable in November when the press started releasing bite size stories about the possibility of it.

the vaccination programme WILL prevent hospitalisations and deaths following any spike in cases for sure as the most vulnerable people have been jabbed.

will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. its as if they knew a new variant would become prevalent once they had wiped out the kent variant through vaccination and lockdowns.

and yes india should have been blocked from coming at least a week prior
