RIP David Shearer

Just read the sad news former Boro striker David Shearer has passed away aged just 63.

Scorer of the first goal I ever saw live in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the 1979/80 season.

Met him at a Former Players dinner in 2017 at The Riverside, where he was resplendent in full Scottish regalia including kilt. Great character. RIP Sheikh.

Blimey sad news indeed. He used to get pelters sometimes but on his day he was decent and scored some good goals. RIP Sheikh

I remember him coming into Bill Jameson’s bookies on Parly Rd every day when I worked there one summer on Uni holiday.
Quiet lad, nice enough.
He started so well I hoped he would be a legend. He was a decent striker who gave 100%.
I feel really sorry tonight. It is tragic that this Highland Lad has passed so young.
RIP David

Awful news, really sad about that, 63 no age at all

DS was part of a veey exciting team managed by John Neal, a team that should have won a trophy

He made his Boro debut scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win over Chelsea on a tuesday night, April 1978

Registered No518 DS went on to make 115 appearances, scoring 30 goals

RIP Dave Shearer x

First thing to say, obviously, is that this is a sadly premature death.

Second thing, though, is that this guy had real ability. Always judge a player by how a team does when he is in it. 1980-81 we were a respectable 14th in First Division and he started 29 games out of 42. He was never officially first choice but Bosco Jancovic or David Hodgson were often unavailable. He didn't like having to play often wide in a front three but even so, contributed 7 league goals.
