RIP Alan Minter

A real tough looking fella in his latter days (I saw him a couple of times when in Liverpool & Manchester) Minter was a WBA & WBC middleweight boxing champion who was dethroned by Marvin Hagler. He finally hung up his gloves in 1981.

Loved watching him. He got ripped to pieces by Hagler.
I remember the trouble leading up to, and immediately after the fight.
RIP

That's just knocked me for 6.

I loved watching Alan Minter box and felt he fought the wrong fight against Hagler, he stood toe to toe with him and should have boxed him. Minter use to cut easily and Hagler made a mess of him. Minter gave me and my dad some great nights watching boxing together and he was one of our favourites. He will sadly be missed.

RIP

Makes me feel old. Remember watching him fight Hagler like it was yesterday, there was a spot of bother at Wembley Arena when the ref stopped it iirc?

A spot? :D It was mayhem.

Classy boxer, Minter. He cut too easy unfortunately. The Vito Antuofermo fights were brilliant boxing displays against a man who had previously held Hagler to a draw to keep his title. Hagler was brutal though, but no shame against one of the all time greats.

I was there at the Minter Hagler fight...went on a trip from the Boro....went to the weigh in too at the Empire Pool...Terry Downes was there with his very young son...bit of a scream ! Unlike the fight but you kinda felt what was going to happen at the weigh in..Hagler looked very ominous....anyway RIP fella

He (minter) had a big NF following - Marvin Hagler soon showed the master race quite how pathetic they are.

i wonder if he did a round with this women;

i recall have a beer or two in his old mans (Sid) private basement club - The Linden Tree - some right characters got in there, like no ones business.

I reckon Joan Collins would have been his biggest test of stamina.

I remember watching that Hagler fight like it was yesterday. Don't think I've ever seen a man so comprehensively beaten in a ring.

That’s the first ever boxing match I remember, didn’t the crowd start chucking their glass beer bottles at Hagler and his corner, after the fight was stopped, due to a bad cut on Minters face?

no they weren't glass, but heavy duty plastic bottles...we were sat up in the side and watching people throw them ringwards they spun in the air drownding everyone in beer. I remember Telly Savallas was sat at the ringside and a huge minder hovered over him and led him away....what a night! Minter was cut to ribbons by Hagler

Ok confession time ....I absolutely loved Alan Minter as a child the reason I do not know! I wrote a fan letter to him when I was about 8 around the time that the prize fighter documentary came out. I think from memory that it was only available in the Odeon. So I was under age and could not go & see it. My lovely Dad got in touch with him & between them arranged for me to have the afternoon off school and have a private viewing in the Odeon which wait for it.... got me in the Northern Echo 😧 And then.. he sent me a birthday card! All my dreams come true😂😂 Wasn’t life simple then? Happy days! RIP Alan

Beyond jealous!

He was a very good champion who was unfortunate to meet one of history's best fighters in Hagler.
