Retro Victorian Boro shirt: MFC Foundation To Benefit From Vintage Shirt Sales

Might be of interest to those interested in retro shirt reproductions. Inspired by research of the Boro historical archives, I think this is the earliest Boro shirt to be reproduced as a retro shirt with the original dating from the 1880s and early 1890s. A significant percentage from each shirt sale will go to the MFC Foundation. There is more info in the Barnsley matchday programme: https://issuu.com/middlesboroughfc/docs/eprog_borobar

What a brilliant idea, Tosh and for a fantastic cause, MFC Foundation.
Back from the days when footballers really did button down their collars and roll up their shirt sleeves for action. Not a hint of red either. More like the old Middlesbrough corporation blue, just like the old buses.

Just as an offshoot from this , has there ever been a 'Nops shirt produced ?
Would be interesting what would of determined your following . Catholic/protestant , location or income etc ?
I'd of been Nops just because of the name

There is a ledger from the Nops at the football club. Boro Historian can correct me here but I think they Ironopolis directors and shareholders were largely tradespeople and shop owners etc as opposed to Middlesbrough FC an amateur club born from the firrmly higher classes cricket club. The original purpose being somewhere the amateur cricketers could keep fit over the long winters.

I had booked my 60th, now cancelled, at the ironops just for that very fact, 👍

IMHO, I would sooner the Boro concentrate on shirt history starting from early 70's, see how that went
1972-73 season we wore 3 different style home shirts, woukd love to see those in the club shop

Erimus - If you have a look this is a special one off put together with Boro Historian to help with much needed funds for MFC Foundation - so rather than being a shop product for Boro it is a 19th century historical replica for the MFC Foundation community charity.

Yes apologies Rob, its a good charity which I wasn't meaning to belittle, I was rather talking selfishly from a collectors perspective

I think you have to realise that outside of the "collector" base there is only a limited market for shirts that look largely similar. Take the oft mooted example of the 76-77 shirt with the black lion in the white band. To a collector it is special to many everyday fans it's just like the other white band shirts from the 70s. So why buy one? It's the reason our modern shirts try to look different every season so that they can flog another batch.

Yes, the Ironopolis directors had more of a mix of the petite bourgeoisie employers and employed in Middlesbrough, this is an extract from Budd's PhD on Sport in Middlesbrough: https://www.dora.dmu.ac.uk/handle/2086/6444

At least they were consistent throughout history with the tightness of the shirt material 😂

It was never intended that I was going to be the model for this! The coronavirus got in the way of a lot of the plans we had to promote it - my modelling days are clearly behind me!
