Dear Constituent,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me, I trust that my reply finds you well.

I realise that there has been much attention in the media prior to and over the recent weekend regarding the Prime Minister’s senior advisor, Dominic Cummings and you have contacted me directly to raise your own concerns in relation to the matter.

This is a difficult time for us all, I know most of you will have followed the Government’s guidelines and not seen family members and friends for months – I join you in that. And I, and I hope you, will continue to follow the guidelines as we move forward and see our collective way through the current pandemic and its effects.

Many of you have asked for my own view on this matter. I will be clear – I support the Prime Minister’s conclusion, which as of Tuesday morning, is for Mr. Cummings to remain in post.

My reason for this is simple. Only the Prime Minister can do both the hiring and firing of his staff and his Cabinet and Ministers. It is therefore up to the Prime Minister to investigate and draw his own conclusion, as any other line-manager would do, in any other job. I have never and will never, support the practice which has become common in our society ‘trial by media’, or perhaps even worse: ‘trial by social-media’.

I know many in Politics, the media and our wider society have used this ‘news story’ as a chance to score political points, perhaps some to try and settle ‘old-scores’, and although there are a plethora of worthy and factual points I could make, particularly regarding the inaccuracies, wilful or otherwise, of left-wing media outlets and others, maybe now is not the time for Party-politics.

The media, and perhaps more seriously, others, be they group or individuals, have been hounding Mr. Cummings, and his immediate family for some time and more recently gathering outside his London home in large groups – breaking the very rules they claim Mr. Cummings broke. They have now moved on to harassing his family in the North-East. I have some sympathies with Mr. Cummins in this regard as due to the death threats and subsequent police advice, my family and I had to leave our lovely home of eight years in the centre of Lincoln back in 2012. It is an unsavoury aspect of ‘modern’ politics and these actions are by those who would undermine our democracy.

I want us all to unite and continue our effort to defeat Covid-19. We as a Country have made much progress, our incredible public services have done us all proud. Over the next few weeks we will see more easing of restrictions and guidance will change. I am particularly pleased to see that ‘non-essential’ high street shops will be open from mid-June. Please can you shop local and support our and your local businesses when they open – now is more important than ever to support these key local and small businesses.

I have received hundreds of emails on this matter, many of them with the same form of words and phrases, others more personalised and I have made the choice to reply ‘en- masse’. Of course, you are more than welcome to write to or email me back if you have any further thoughts, and I will try and respond to you as soon as possible to your home address, therefore please ensure you provide an address.

Finny, I don't suppose I will recieve anything much better either from Nadine Dorries. He does make some valid points, but none of those points detract from the fact the Cummings is wrong, the PM has lied on his behalf, and Cummings and his supporters are treating the electorate like fools.

Funny that, he is a long long way from the view my Tory MP has concluded on the same evidence too. How can we resolve this set of differences :unsure:

What would Harry Hill do to get them both to resolve their differences., ah yes............ FIGHT!
 
In short, I said I wasn't really interested in the consequences for DC but would like to know his personal opinion on the actions of DC and how he went on to justify it.
I also said I was a loyal conservative voter - in order to take politics out of it.
 
All he’s done in that letter is make out that Cummings is some kind of victim, non of it justices his actions - non whatsoever. He helped write the rules we were supposed to abide by - he’s done the opposite of the very rules he helped write

That letter could have been written (at a push) by a member of the National Socialist Party in Germany in the 1930s i.e. hordes of enemies on the street threatening decent volk. Our people mis judged in the Press etc. The World is against etc. Our Leader know best trust in him etc. - Scary.

I agree opponents of the Conservative Party are making as most as they can about this and that is a fair, but it does not excuse all the actions of DC which we against the spirit of what we were instructed to do to protect others as well as ourselves.

What I find interesting is that DC to me appears to have almost no compassion for anyone outside his immediate family and I don't think this bothers him. Is he the ultimate "Child of Thatcher"
 
Redwurzel, there are lots of people like cummings, people who have no sense of community, of offerring a helping hand, protecting those in society who are most vulnerable. I suspect cummings, due to circumstances, is used to saying what he likes and getting away with it.

This man and his wife acted in a completely selfish manner, there was not a moments thought for anyone else, just themselves and what they might have to contend with. The rules were clear stay home, protect the NHS, save lives. They certainly jeopardised the last two of that mantra. His wife ended up in a Durham hospital whilst infected with the virus herself (allegedly) the rules were in place to stop this kind of scenario ever happening - the same rules Cummings wrote himself! What a farce !

Funky - I would go further in that he seems to think he did the right thing i.e. has no awareness he is in a greater society beyond his own little world and that the welfare of others depend on him and vice versa. This is very worrying when you think he is an important driver in Government Policy. But it would explain some of the very heartless and incompetent decisions made by the DWP in regards to people with disabilities.
 
I've read a number of replies from MP's now both on here and on social media.

They all have the same tone and hint at the constituents being mischief makers and receiving email complaints which fit a particular template. Not only that most MP's seem to be putting this down to a media witch hunt.

Firstly, accusing constituents of using templates to create email complaints is a bit rich in the current climate. How many Tory MP's were basically copy and pasting the same tweets of support at the weekend?

Secondly, this isn't a left wing media witch hunt. YouGov polls show a large number of people agree that Cummings broke the rules and should be sacked, the bbc phone in yesterday was full of callers who were absolutely livid, I've spoken to a number of people who voted for Brexit and Boris over the last few years and they think Cummings should be sacked.

Finally, even Conservative MP's are even coming out and criticising the government.

This isn't about right or left for me, it isn't about one man making a mistake (who hasn't?) Its about trust in the government, I think the government have done a pretty good job at getting people to adhere to the lockdown but this could potentially shatter that now.

We need to be working together not acting in our own best interests.
