Remember this day 1986 when we absolutely battered Sheffield United

Only to end up losing 2-1 with Sheff Utd striker & Boro lad Edwards playing for them, scoring I think also, as the mighty Boro lost the game 2-1 at Ayresome Park
Don O'Riordan scored our consolation goal to double his league seasons account

This was Boro's 3rd home game & 4th since Sir Bruce took over from the late, great Willie Maddren, won one, drew one, lost one
The board were so impressed with the transformation in performance of the team that they offered him the position as full time Boro manager, as opposed to temporary manager

Bruce's team that day

Stephen Pears
Brian Laws
Irving Nattrass
Tony Mowbray
Don O'Riordan
Gary Pallister
Bernie Slaven
Gary Gill
Dave Currie
Gary Rowell
Peter Beagrie
Sub
Colin Cooper

Attendance - 5,736

This was the first match I remember attending where the result didn't **** me off at the end, as it was probably the best football I'd seen us play since the end of the John Neal era.

I was at this game, unbelievable we got beat...the shackles were off and we played attacking football. Remember being really impressed with Slaven 👍

Keith Edwards thats his name, came from Stockton I recall, he must have signed for Sheff Utd as a youngster

John Burridge played a blinder in goal for them he was a very good keeper at the time...
I'm not certain but I think Peter Withe may have been playing for them that night.
They also had Mel Eves Kevin Arnott, Ken Mcnaught Colin Morris Steve Wigley who all had good careers...

When I read the post title I was thinking of the wrong one, the 6-0 (or 6-1?) Ripley hattrick which must've been in 88

6-0 mate, another cracking performance

Was that game Trevor Seniors home debut, or a game after his home debut, think he bagged a brace that day

I don't recall the other goals I was a young kid at the time. I used the think that Boro won every game at that point and unfortunately that came to an abrupt end with the Leicester game. Having said that it still worked out ok, and in a much more memorable fashion

Without a doubt, I still think if we hadn't have gone down we may not have had the unbelievable few seasons that followed

For me, this was where the seed was planted that set us on those first steps to brighter, and more successful future. Yes, the club very nearly died in that awful Summer that was to follow, but this performance gave us some genuine hope and belief that things could (and would) get better. We played them off the park, we had width, we moved the ball quickly and played with real intent and it was light years from what we'd seen previously in the season. Burridge played like a world-beater and just had one of those nights - to be fair he always was a great keeper. I remember the standing ovation like it was yesterday and when I went in to work the next day and we were talking about the Boro my workmates didn't believe me when I said we'd been superb.
A great memory, in spite of the defeat, but the course was set and the rest, as they say, is history.
PS, I absolutely love Bruce Rioch. UTFB

Yes, just as I remember, apart from Burridge been in goal, as Nobby mentioned earlier, I have the programmes but can't recall anything about Burridge, great keeper who had a very good career

As I was reading this thread, I was wondering would we have been wound up and then had that bonding of fans and players if we hadn't gone down.

My thought was unlikely and we would probably continued to struggle, sack Bruce and then who knows?

European champions 5 years on the trot as we would have got somebody even better to kead the revival? (🤣)
