The Sunderland thread got me thinking about the frequency with which the 3 newly promoted teams are now coming straight back down to the championship. As a rule I don’t like them tinkering with the game so have included do nothing as an option, but I wonder if there are any ways of spicing it up a bit down there?

Option A)
Make 18th position a play off position against the team in 17th so at least potentially giving one of the newly promoted teams a shot at staying up?

Option B)
Totally rip it up and make the bottom 6 a series of one legged survival play offs.
20th v 15th
19th v 16th
18th v 17th
All played at Wembley over course of a weekend.

Option C)
Do nothing, if you go down you go down.

Bottom 8 go down, 6 up automatically and 2 via the play offs.

The most likely scenario is that they decide that promoted teams aren't good enough so they are going to scrap relegation and make it a 16 team league.

The only solution really is to increase the money in the championship so the difference between the two leagues isn't so big but that would require the PL sharing some of the money around which isn't going to happen. It would also just push the problem further down the pyramid and the difference between the championship and L1 would grow.

I don't like the playoffs. I don't think it's fair that the team that finishes 6th can be promoted when he team that finishes 3rd isn't. I get that it keeps the league interesting for more of the season but it doesn't make it right. The worst team in the PL shouldn't have an opportunity for survival via a playoff.
