Regis Le Bris

I don't think they were any better than us. How many chances did we create ? We could have been 3 -0 up before he had time for a HT speech
But we weren't because of terrible finishing. The got away with it, saw an opportunity and took it. Once our good early spell was over we didn't know what else to do, so just kept trying to do the same stuff and their increased intensity caused us to make more and more mistakes.

And any of the three chances that fell to Forss to make it 2 nil
Thought Forss really should have scored from Hackney’s pass. It was very poor execution.

How good was the Burgzog chance? Haven’t seen it back but it seemed decent. The one he took a touch, turned but put wide.

It’s just a soundbite from a manager. You’ll find dozens of them saying the same thing every weekend. Eventually fans and players grow weary of hearing the same thing and it becomes less impactful.

Let’s see if Le Bris actually achieves anything before crowning him as some kind of managerial genius. After all he’s doing no better than Karanka did in his first full season with us and look how that turned out 2 years later.
It turned out to produce the only promotion this century. It didn’t win us the Premier League when we got there, which seems to be half the entitled ***** on here think we should expect. It was still better than all the others have managed.

I’m still looking forward to his Sunderland team falling apart and drifting down the league. It must be due to happen any day now.
Well it already happened didn't it? They fell right off the ridiculous pace they'd set at the start of the season. 6 games without a win at one point. People weren't predicting it, they were observing that it had happened.

But credit to them they went through that sticky patch and have turned it round to get themselves right back in the mix for the autos.

Sunderland were literally top, with a gap, early in the season.

They are now 5pts off top, 3 off auto's.

They have dropped.

Why can't some fans see this?

Of course they have dropped.
So what?

It’s about us and our form is absolutely shocking at the moment.
But
It’s ok
Carrick isn’t worried about our form

He was correct. The first half Sunderland were poor. However, I’m not a huge fan of the Sunderland manager. I think he can be rather disrespectful to opposing teams in pre match press conferences. He’s done it a few times. Also, a lot of Sunderland fans will tell you that his in game management isn’t great. Not quick enough to make changes etc.

Le Bris came in the summer, took a group of players that (many of) had played in the 3rd tier, and with a few additions turned them into promotion contenders. They lost a couple of their best players from last season.

If he's disrespectful, then that's bad. But his game management must be streets ahead of Carrick, who has now had 2 seasons and a lot of money to sort out a squad, a style of play, a best team, a plan B, and eradicate persistent mistakes. He's done none of those things, and the team now looks much poorer than the one he largely inherited when he took over.

No matter which way you look at it, Carrick's team is significantly less than the sum of the parts.

I'm pretty sure he'll be in post until the playoffs are out of reach ( which won't be long now) and then he'll be sacked.

As great as Sunderland have been this season I can't see them finishing in the top 2.

They didn't deserve to win that game last night, not on the balance if the whole game and we're gifted to lucky goals.

In fact, I have a sneaking feeling that we'll play them in the play offs.

I've looked at the bookies odds. I always like to see how they value matters, knowing we as 'Boro fans have a high level of bias and they have it currently:

Promotion:
Leeds 1/20
Sheff Utd 8/13
Burnley EVENS
Sunderland 5/4
'Boro 6/1
West Brom 10/1
Blackburn, Norwich, Coventry 20/1

Top 6:
Leeds 1/2000
Sheff Utd 1/1000
Burnley 1/100
Sunderland 1/33
'Boro 5/6
West Brom 8/5
Norwich 11/4
Blackburn 7/2

So the bookies have the top 4 heavy favs for promotion - effectively saying 3 of those 4 will go up, with us and the Baggies as outsiders.

And they have us as odds on favs to make the top 6 and Baggies grabbing the other spot.

Looking at those odds...I think the bookies, currently, have the table finishing as:

1st - Leeds
2nd - Sheff Utd
3rd - Burnley
4th - Sunderland
5th - 'Boro
6th - West Brom

I’d rather play Sunderland than Burnley in the playoffs.

Burnley seem well suited to grinding out an ugly win when it matters

Lennie Lawrence took us up with a much inferior squad than Karanka had. Like Karanka he's done nothing since of note.

The play offs? We need the equivalent of 9 wins in 16 (71 points). With 3 wins in 12 and 12 wins in 33 all season, new players to bed in, the two full backs looking awful, centre backs auditioning for the key stone cops. I fully admire your optimism.

They'll really put us to bed over two legs, far too strong for us.

If we even manage it, which i doubt at the minute.

Personally wouldn't say far too strong.

On another evening, we are 2-0 up if Forss scores that chance when we were heavily on top....completely different game then.

I think they're a better team than us. But I would definitely give us a fighting chance against them. They're not that good that we should be in awe of them.

There is only 1 team in this division that I think would destroy us over two legs, and they're perched at the top of the league and will go on to win the league.

People getting excited over Le Bris' quote are probably the same people who were getting all excited about Mowbray's speech on coaching during the recent interview with Higgy and Wheater and using it as a stick to beat Carrick with.

Anyway, 2 defeats and a win later and Mowbray maybe isn't the footballing genius he was made out to be.

People are being disingenuous here imo. Everybody knows what people meant when they said Sunderland will collapse and fall down the league and it wasn’t falling all the way from 1st to 4th.

They said it about Ipswich as well. And probably someone else the season before. Luton Town probably.
I think maybe a bit of both.

I (and others) made exactly the same point that their chances of automatic seemed to be fading when this was discussed while Sunderland were going through that sticky patch.

I also said at the time that they'd still make the play-offs.

That's not being disingenuous.

To be fair they're doing better than I thought they would.

But that's the whole season in a microcosm.

The team has been spurning chances all season - think about the game at Norwich. 2 goals up, and a chance to go 3 up from the penalty spot. Penalty missed. Within a few minutes it was 3-3. And Sheff Wed too.

It's unlikely that Forss would score those chances because he's hardly played for a year, and even if he had scored, the defence is so poor that Sunderland would have scored at least two anyway.

Last night was just absolutely typical of the season.
