Reform councillors in Durham, dear me

Surely this fraud. More money to be forked out by the tax payer for more elections. How can people be so thick with only one head?

They can resign from their job, they'll just have to weigh up whether it is worth doing that to retain their £13.3k annual allowance as a councillor.

Nah, not fraud, just that a lot of them will have been 'paper names' only and never expected to win and are now realising the implications. One of them down South has had to go 'Independent' as he is serving in the armed forces and so not allowed to represent a political party...
There'll have been loads more like this, we're only finding out about the ones who were elected and can't continue. Lack of vetting.

I wouldn't have another election just announce the winner is the candidate who came second.

I would also ask any candidate to sign a legally binding declaration in future that says they will take their post up if elected.

According to the Electoral Commission, they would need to have both resigned and served their notice before standing for election. They can't just see how they get on.

Yep, I always understood it as, if you work in a political restrictive post or work for the council then you must quit before you stand for an elected position.

Another Durham councillor Darren “crafty” Grimes posted and then quickly deleted A promise to open the Durham coal mines again. Presumably on the instruction of his bosses who even they saw how stupid a suggestion it was.
